{"id":227139,"date":"2025-06-30T17:17:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T17:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/227139\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T17:17:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T17:17:18","slug":"germany-to-help-ukraine-make-weapons-more-quickly-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/227139\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany to help Ukraine make weapons more quickly \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\">Germany<\/a> aims to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">Ukraine<\/a> manufacture more weapons more quickly as Kyiv looks to strengthen its negotiating position in peace talks with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a> about ending their more than three-year war, Germany\u2019s foreign minister has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe see our task as helping Ukraine so that it can negotiate more strongly,\u201d foreign minister Johann Wadephul said during a visit to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Monday, accompanied by German defence industry representatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a>-led international peace efforts have failed to make progress on halting the fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Russian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> has effectively rejected a ceasefire and has not budged from his war goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhen Putin speaks of peace today, it is pure mockery,\u201d Mr Wadephul told a news conference with Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/05\/28\/germanys-merz-vows-long-range-weapons-for-ukraine-following-talks-with-zelenskiy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Germany\u2019s Merz vows long-range weapons for Ukraine following talks with ZelenskiyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHis apparent readiness to negotiate is only a facade so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Russia\u2019s invasion shows no sign of letting up. Its grinding war of attrition along the roughly 1,000km front-line and long-range strikes on civilian areas of Ukraine have killed thousands of troops and civilians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ukraine is outgunned and short-handed on the front-line, and international aid has been vital for Ukraine\u2019s resistance against its neighbour\u2019s bigger army and economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Germany has been Ukraine\u2019s second-largest military backer after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a>, whose continuing support is in doubt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to build new joint ventures so that Ukraine itself can produce faster and more for its own defence, because your needs are enormous,\u201d Mr Wadephul said while standing next to Mr Sybiha.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"German foreign minister Johann Wadephul (left) and Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv. said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we can even benefit mutually from it \u2013 with your wealth of ideas and your experience, we will become better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Wadephul was also due to meet with Ukraine president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His trip to Kyiv came less than 48 hours after Russia launched its biggest combined aerial attack against Ukraine over the weekend, Ukrainian officials said, in an escalating bombing campaign that has further dashed hopes for a breakthrough in peace efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ukraine\u2019s air force said on Monday it had detected 107 Russian Shahed and decoy drones in the country\u2019s airspace overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph Ukraine\u2019s northeastern Kharkiv region left two civilians dead and eight injured, including a six-year-old child, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The aerial onslaughts are calculated by Russia to squeeze Ukraine into submission, according to the Institute for the Study of War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cRussia is continuing to use increasingly large numbers of drones in its overnight strike packages in order to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences and enable subsequent cruise and ballistic missile strikes,\u201d the Washington-based think tank said late on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe increases in Russia\u2019s strike packages in recent weeks are largely due to Russia\u2019s efforts to scale up its defence industrial production, particularly of Shahed and decoy drones and ballistic missiles,\u201d the institute added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Sybiha thanked Germany for its contribution to Ukraine\u2019s air defence and urged Berlin to send more anti-missile systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Russians \u201care attacking civilian targets in order to create panic, to influence the mood of our population\u201d, he said. \u201cThe key is the air defence system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Berlin has balked at granting Mr Zelenskiy\u2019s request to provide Ukraine with powerful German and Swedish-made Taurus long-range missiles, which could potentially hit targets inside Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That is due to fears such a move could enrage the Kremlin and draw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation-nato\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation-nato\/\">Nato<\/a> into Europe\u2019s biggest conflict since the second World War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">German chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/friedrich-merz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/friedrich-merz\/\">Friedrich Merz<\/a> pledged in May to help Ukraine develop its own long-range missile systems that would be free of any western-imposed limitations on their use and targets. \u2013
