{"id":227246,"date":"2025-06-30T18:17:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T18:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/227246\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T18:17:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T18:17:11","slug":"more-than-500-homes-to-be-built-in-rapidly-expanding-village-near-bristol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/227246\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 500 homes to be built in rapidly expanding village near Bristol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They include a neighbourhood centre, football pitches and allotments<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1751307431_17_0_Pennymeads-525-Homes-Charfield-Ceg-Pic.jpg\" alt=\"Artist\\'s impression of the 525-home Pennymeads development in Charfield (Image: CEG, free to use by all partners)\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>(Image: Local Democracy Reporting Service)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Developers have been granted planning permission by South Gloucestershire Council to build hundreds of homes in a rapidly expanding village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They will build 525 homes, a neighbourhood centre, football pitches and allotments, but there are concerns over a lack of public services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The new housing estate will be called Pennymeads, and will be built on farmland south of the village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The plans were approved by councillors on the strategic sites delivery committee on Thursday, June 26, with six votes in favour and three votes against.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Charlotte Robinson, representing the applicants CEG, said: \u201cThis application brings forward a site which has been identified by the council to be suitable, appropriate and deliverable for residential development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The proposal would deliver new homes, including 35 per cent affordable, housing suitable for older people, and five per cent of plots for self and custom build.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere would be an opportunity for small businesses to be established or grow at the local centre. Firms and jobs can be kept in Charfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Extensive green infrastructure is proposed, including three football pitches and changing rooms. Other types of open space will be provided, such as walking routes, children\u2019s play areas and allotments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Developers would put forward \u00a32.3 million to help reopen the railway station, improve bus services and a \u201cgreenway\u201d between Charfield and Wotton-under-Edge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Upgrades to the nearby junction 14 of the M5 motorway are also planned. The village is growing substantially, with another huge development planned, as well as a plan to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/primary-school-growing-south-gloucestershire-10159755\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">expand the primary school<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Liberal Democrat Councillor John O\u2019Neil, representing Charfield, said: \u201cThere have been many objections, some of these are justified and a lot of them are because of the level of development we\u2019ve had in Charfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It\u2019s quite a distressing thing. We\u2019ve had three [major developments] in the last seven or eight years and they all come onto the Wotton Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But one concern is the lack of public services in the village to match the ballooning population. While Charfield is close to the town of Wotton-under-Edge, some councillors and local residents believe the village needs its own services upgraded too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Conservative Cllr Liz Brennan said: \u201cIf it was me living in Charfield, and I was getting all these houses, and they\u2019ve already seen so many new houses, I would want out of this so much more. I would want a bigger shop, a guarantee that my children could go to school there, buses, and just so much more.
