Courts have received 20,538 cases of service personnel absent without leave, desertion or refusing orders since the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/1620639\/Why-Russia-invaded-Ukraine-Putin-reasons-evg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal invasion began in February 2022<\/a>, according to Russian independent news service Mediazone.<\/p>\n<p>The majority \u2013 18,159 \u2013 were for soldiers going awol, with 17,721 being prosecuted under <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a>\u2019s Criminal Code. The maximum punishment is a 10-year jail term. However, those found guilty could commute their sentences by serving in the Storm-Z convict assault units. In its latest update on the European war, the UK\u2019s Defence Intelligence said: \u201cThis all runs counter to the official narrative that the Russian leadership values the military service of those who fight in <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/russia-ukraine-war?pageNumber=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s illegal war in Ukraine<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/russia\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a> also reportedly lost 10,980 tanks, 22,922 armoured fighting vehicles, 53,593 vehicles and fuel tanks, and 29,718 artillery systems.
