{"id":229334,"date":"2025-07-01T12:55:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T12:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/229334\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T12:55:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T12:55:14","slug":"spains-right-eyes-no-confidence-vote-as-sanchez-ally-jailed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/229334\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s right eyes no-confidence vote as S\u00e1nchez ally jailed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>MADRID \u2013 Spain\u2019s conservative opposition leader Alberto N\u00fa\u00f1ez Feij\u00f3o said on Tuesday that his party will soon begin testing whether S\u00e1nchez\u2019s allies might back a no-confidence vote against the prime minister.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Feij\u00f3o&#8217;s move comes a day after a judge ordered the preventive imprisonment of Santos Cerd\u00e1n, S\u00e1nchez\u2019s PSOE&#8217;s number two,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>citing flight risk, in connection with a major corruption scandal that has rocked the Socialist party for the past two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His number two has slept in prison, but S\u00e1nchez intends to continue. It is unsustainable&#8221;, Feij\u00f3o <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NunezFeijoo\/status\/1939927983302590602\">said<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Feij\u00f3o has also tasked the People&#8217;s Party&#8217;s (PP)&#8217;s parliamentary spokeperson, Miguel Tellado,\u00a0with contacting the groups propping up S\u00e1nchez\u2019s government to ask whether they still stand behind him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now they are the only obstacle for Spaniards to speak, and we can repair so much decadence,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nGovernment spokesperson Pilar Alegr\u00eda ruled out PSOE\u2019s involvement in the Supreme Court ruling that jailed Cerd\u00e1n, saying: &#8220;There are no indications to that effect,&#8221; El Pa\u00eds <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/espana\/2025-07-01\/ultima-hora-de-la-actualidad-politica-en-directo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Exploiting Puigdemont\u2019s discontent<br \/>\nS\u00e1nchez governs with a precarious majority through a coalition between the PSOE and the left-wing platform Sumar, backed in turn by a patchwork of nationalist and separatist parties. <\/p>\n<p>\nThese include the Catalan separatist JxCat, led by former regional president Carles Puigdemont, and their left-wing rivals ERC, as well as the Basque nationalist PNV and the radical left-wing EH Bildu \u2013 which many on the right consider the political heir of ETA.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAmong the promises S\u00e1nchez made to JxCat in exchange for their votes, and which Santos Cerd\u00e1n himself negotiated in Switzerland, is a controversial amnesty law for those implicated in the serious secessionist attempt of October 2017 in Catalonia, including Puigdemont, currently in self-exile in Waterloo, near Brussels.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOn several occasions, the former Catalan president has stated that the agreement between the PSOE and JxCat \u2013 negotiated by Cerd\u00e1n himself \u2013 was not being respected, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/politics\/news\/puigdemont-threatens-to-torpedo-2025-budget-as-sanchez-cant-be-trusted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adding<\/a> S\u00e1nchez &#8220;cannot be trusted.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>Left wants full accountability<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"214\">The backlash hasn\u2019t come only from the right. PSOE&#8217;s ally Sumar, and the broader Spanish left, including radical party Podemos, have demanded \u201cexemplary\u201d measures\u00a0in response to the scandal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"216\" data-end=\"378\">&#8220;Seeing Cerd\u00e1n go to jail is a disgrace. The situation is very serious.
