While not a catastrophic result given the sequel\u2019s $25 million budget, those ticket sales represent a fatal decline in interest from the original, 2023\u2019s \u201cM3GAN.\u201d The first film ignited to $30 million domestically and $45 million globally and became a sleeper hit for Universal and Blumhouse, ultimately earning $180 million against a $12 million budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLackluster reviews and an unfavorable release date didn\u2019t help in terms of turnout for \u201cM3GAN 2.0,\u201d though moviegoers were surprisingly fonder of the sequel (which earned a \u201cB+\u201d grade on CinemaScore exit polls) compared to the first (which landed a \u201cB\u201d score). The trouble is that too few people were incentivized to buy a ticket in the first place. Gerard Johnstone returned to write and direct the follow-up film, which brings back the murderous artificial intelligence doll known as M3GAN (short for Model 3 Generative Android) as she\u2019s rebooted with advanced upgrades to stop a dangerous humanoid military robot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNothing appears to be wrong with the movie,\u201d David A. Gross, who runs the FranchiseRe movie consulting firm. \u201c[But] the story is struggling to show something new, and fans are moving on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHere, Variety unpacks five reasons why \u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d didn\u2019t replicate the success of the original.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>A gimmick that didn\u2019t extend past the first film\u2019s 100-minute runtime <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore the first film, M3GAN became an online sensation thanks to her killer dance moves and campy energy. But the weak turnout for the sequel suggests the pint-sized agent of chaos was a one-off viral phenomenon rather than the next enduring scream queen. That could be a problem since a spinoff called \u201cSoulm8te,\u201d a sci-fi thriller about man who buys an android to cope with the death of his wife, is set to open in January 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Release date trouble<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe first \u201cM3GAN\u201d thrived in part because the horror film debuted during the notorious box office dead zone of January. Since there wasn\u2019t much on movie theater marquees (at that time, \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water\u201d was dominating the charts in its fourth weekend of release), audiences didn\u2019t have the luxury of choice if they wanted to go to the movies. Instead of sticking with the frame that worked for \u201cM3GAN,\u201d or testing the waters in October when horror tends to thrive, the studio set the second film to release during the comparatively packed summer movie season. \u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d couldn\u2019t stand out as counter-programming and got lost in the sea of blockbuster such as Brad Pitt\u2019s racing drama \u201cF1,\u201d Universal\u2019s \u201cHow to Train Your Dragon\u201d live-action remake and Disney\u2019s \u201cLilo &amp; Stitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d leaned too much into camp and not enough into horror<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tInstead of doubling down on scares, much of the marketing for \u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d revolved around the doll\u2019s status as a sass master and camp icon. That certainly makes for a fun promotional campaign, where pithy jokes and silly moments abound in the trailers and on posters. But the choice to focus on comedic aspects could have alienated horror mavens who were craving true frights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>A.I. seems more frightening than funny at this point<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSummer is all about escapism, but that\u2019s not the case with M3GAN when headlines are constantly blaring about how AI is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2025\/04\/25\/the-jobs-that-will-fall-first-as-ai-takes-over-the-workplace\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2025\/04\/25\/the-jobs-that-will-fall-first-as-ai-takes-over-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\">about to take everyone\u2019s jobs<\/a> \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/27\/technology\/ai-spending-openai-amazon-meta.html\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/27\/technology\/ai-spending-openai-amazon-meta.html\" target=\"_blank\">or worse<\/a>. When M3GAN was introduced to audiences, the artificially intelligent robot seemed like an implausible gag. But much has changed in the short two years since her cinematic debut. A subplot in \u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d involves the\u00a0scientist Gemma (Allison Williams), who originally helped create the manicured doll, testifying before Congress about the dangers of AI. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince it\u2019s a hot topic in real life, too, Williams has been repeatedly asked about the future of AI during the film\u2019s press tour. In one of the many questions she\u2019s recently had to field about the topic, Williams acknowledged the concerning shift in vibes amid the rapid, unknowable evolution of AI. \u201cThe first movie took place at a time when [AI] was much more nascent. You had to introduce the vocabulary of it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/in-m3gan-20-allison-williams-absolutely-gets-the-joke\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Williams told Vanity Fair.<\/a> \u201cNow, though, people are super-intimately aware of\u2014and, I think, wary of\u2014their use of AI. It fundamentally changes the experience of watching the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Blumhouse\u2019s bumpy patch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter an unrivaled run of horror hits (\u201cParanormal Activity,\u201d \u201cThe Purge,\u201d \u201cGet Out\u201d and \u201cHalloween\u201d among them), Blumhouse is enduring a rare fallow period at the box office. Misfires in 2025 include January\u2019s \u201cWolf Man\u201d ($34 million against a $25 million budget), March\u2019s \u201cThe Woman in the Yard\u201d ($23 million against a $12 million budget) and April\u2019s \u201cDrop\u201d ($28 million against an $8 million budget). As part of the horror empire\u2019s business model, Blumhouse avoids any total financial fiascos by keeping costs low. Although \u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d was twice the price of the first film, any box office losses will be negligible.
