His personal trainer Dan Avasilcai\u00a0put the thespian through five months of training, two of which included a regime of weight training and running combined with a diet rich in protein, complex carbohydrates and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eH8Wn04TUsi\" data-wc=\"37\">Ralph\u2019s trainer shared several photos of Ralph post-transformation on social media, with the actor\u2019s makeover causing a furore among fans, with the star almost unrecognisable from his recent role as Cardinal Lawrence in the political thriller Conclave.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ePh5Aj4eWmC\" data-wc=\"33\">Keen to understand the level of work that goes into Ralph\u2019s epic transformation, we spoke to personal trainer Jack Claxton, who works at<a class=\"hm-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidlloyd.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\">\u00a0David Lloyd Clubs<\/a>, for his take on Ralph\u2019s new physique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ralph Fiennes&#8217; training regime<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"eKuUX_yXs3ey\" data-wc=\"29\">\u201cThe routine to get a physique like Ralph\u2019s would be intense &#8211; but that\u2019s what is needed for the consistency and discipline to get your body fat down considerably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"eHsqe6bHaJOB\" data-wc=\"39\">Jack notes that the amount of work needed to get into Ralph\u2019s shape depends on your starting point. \u201cI would aim for four or five gym sessions a week, mixing strength and an athletic style of training,\u201d Jack suggests.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ejVmDc5Sa7Jk\" data-wc=\"25\">\u201cThe strength training would consist of an upper and lower body split twice a week and a core\/cardio type programme to hit the athletic side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6df33be6f468-gettyimages-2202420606.jpg\"   width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ralph Fiennes in a smart suit and bowtie at the oscars in 2025\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" class=\"image im-Z2Vp\"\/>\u00a9 Penske Media via Getty ImagesRalph Fiennes worked hard ahead of his role in The  Return<br \/>\n<strong>Ralph&#8217;s recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"eXvhjtxG3h4H\" data-wc=\"38\">Prioritising recovery is essential when working at this level, implores Jack. \u201cRegular visits to a sauna and plunge pool, plus active recovery such as walks and swimming will ensure you don\u2019t get injured and keep your mobility up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strength training in your 60s\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"e7lVb66KaJ\" data-wc=\"30\">In later life, our approach to fitness needs to be different. &#8220;In our sixties, we&#8217;re not just training for aesthetics, we&#8217;re training for longevity and independence,&#8221; says <a class=\"hm-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gymbox.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\">GymBox&#8217;s <\/a>Ronni McKay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"eTuI5UcnlS\" data-wc=\"49\">&#8220;My biggest tip is to skip generic plans. Work with a trainer who understands the unique needs of older adults and build something tailored. People think it&#8217;s about doing what you used to do &#8211; when it&#8217;s really not! It&#8217;s about doing what works now &#8211; safely and consistently.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"eC-TrlLPf35O\" data-wc=\"27\">As Jack notes, at 62, a holistic approach to fitness is needed, and most of us won\u2019t be able to plunge into fitness headfirst in Ralph&#8217;s way.<\/p>\n<p> <img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/fa97277adb62-still-01.jpg\"   width=\"1024\" height=\"426\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ralph Fiennes stars as Cardinal Lawrence in film Conclave\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" class=\"image im-Z2Vp\"\/>\u00a9 Courtesy of Focus Features. \u00c2\u00a9 2Ralph Fiennes is unrecognisable from his role in Conclave<\/p>\n<p id=\"eKyQV6jbOzYr\" data-wc=\"19\">\u201cFor a beginner, I\u2019d take a gentler approach of two or three weight training sessions per week,\u201d says Jack.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ex8fNjwo1yOG\" data-wc=\"29\">\u201cFor beginners, the exercises would be lower impact but still include resistance training. I would suggest sticking with machines and not overcomplicating the workout with free weights straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"excFLPtd32S9\" data-wc=\"53\">He notes that there should still be an element of cardio, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s still important to include something that\u2019s going to improve your VO2 max such as cardio training. To achieve progress, we would recommend an upper body resistance session, a lower body resistance session and a core and steady state cardio session.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"e0Huci8NpQ\" data-wc=\"30\">Ronni agrees with the importance of recovery, adding: &#8220;For a man in his 60s looking to follow suit, I\u2019d recommend a smart, balanced routine that prioritises strength, mobility, and recovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"eVT0Ozb93Ya\" data-wc=\"58\">&#8220;There should be a focus on compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, rows, and presses,&#8221; Ronni continues. &#8220;These exercises hit multiple muscle groups and build functional strength. Add in isolation work to support joint health and build shape.
