A report by Stockport council found there were 15 crashes in the last three years\"StSt Mary’s Way in Stockport.<\/p>\n

The speed limit on a major Stockport road could be lowered after concerns about crashes \u201con a weekly basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

St Mary\u2019s Way is a 40mph road in the centre of Stockport<\/a> which provides a route between the A6 and M60<\/a> motorway via Portwood roundabout.<\/p>\n

A report by Stockport council<\/a> found there were 15 collisions in the last three years on St Mary\u2019s Way, recorded around the junctions of New Bridge Lane and Spring Gardens\/Hall Street.<\/p>\n

This led to 25 non-fatal casualties, where there were four serious injuries.<\/p>\n

Coun Jon Byrne, from Stockport council\u2019s opposition Labour<\/a> group, said: \u201cSt Mary\u2019s Way is a known hotspot for accidents, and with the current speed limit of 40mph, the severity of the injuries caused is enhanced.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur colleagues on Manchester council have already moved ahead with reducing urban 40mph roads to 30mph.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not prepared to wait for Stockport council to catch up and risk more families suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"CouncillorsCouncillors in Stockport have called for the speed limit to be lowered to try and reduce crashes.<\/p>\n

Coun Laura Clingan said she lives close to St Mary\u2019s Way and sees incidents on the road every week, with residents “contacting us on a very regular basis saying there\u2019s been another crash.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report about collisions on the road was discussed during a meeting at Stockport town hall on June 19.<\/p>\n

Councillors at the meeting called for the speed limit to be lowered to 30mph, and to bring in cameras to keep an eye on speeding and red-light jumping.<\/p>\n

Stockport council\u2019s cabinet member for transport, Coun Grace Bayham, said road safety is a top priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take the concerns raised by councillors and residents about road safety on St Mary\u2019s Way seriously,” she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to creating safer streets, in line with our Vision Zero commitments, and we are investigating speed limit reductions on other roads across the borough.<\/p>\n
