{"id":230360,"date":"2025-07-01T21:55:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T21:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/230360\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T21:55:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T21:55:12","slug":"russia-backed-fund-pravfond-that-bankrolled-aussie-cossack-sanctioned-by-australia-over-anti-ukraine-propaganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/230360\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia-backed fund Pravfond that bankrolled &#8216;Aussie Cossack&#8217; sanctioned by Australia over anti-Ukraine propaganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Russian-backed organisation that has bankrolled the legal defence of alleged spies and criminals has been sanctioned by the federal government just weeks after an investigation detailed its support for Australia&#8217;s most prominent pro-Putin propagandist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The joint investigation between the ABC and the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/project\/dear-compatriots\/russian-foundation-aimed-at-helping-compatriots-abroad-supports-spies-criminals-and-propagandists\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)<\/a> revealed the organisation, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-21\/pravfond-paid-legal-fees-of-aussie-cossack-simeon-boikov\/105297984\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105297984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pravfond, had paid the legal bills of Simeon Boikov, also known as &#8220;Aussie Cossack&#8221;<\/a>, and successfully lobbied for him to be granted Russian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The sanctioning of Pravfond means Australian individuals and entities will no longer be able to make assets available to or for the benefit of Pravfond, and any assets held on behalf of or controlled by Pravfond must be frozen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian financial authorities must also closely scrutinise its transactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Formally known as &#8220;Foundation to Support and Defend the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad&#8221;, Pravfond was founded in 2012 with the stated goal of defending the rights of expat Russians, primarily by offering assistance if they get into legal trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Previous reporting has indicated that it <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/02\/revealed-russian-legal-defence-foundation-pravfond-europe\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has helped pay for the legal defence of notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout and hit man Vadim Krasikov<\/a>, who murdered a Chechen militant in Berlin in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a suit shakes hands with a man in a baseball cap\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/4d32d2d1667ef264304b16cbf2d6513b\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Russian President Vladimir Putin greets hit man Vadim Krasikov at a Moscow airport after Krasikov was released in a prisoner exchange with Western countries in August last year. (Reuters: Sputnik\/Mikhail Voskresensky)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several top Pravfond figures, including its deputy director, Vladimir Pozdorovkin, have been identified as former Russian intelligence officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The joint investigation drew on a cache of 50,000 internal emails to reveal Pravfond&#8217;s support for Boikov, who had been hiding from authorities in the Russian consulate in Sydney since December 2022 after he assaulted a pro-Ukraine protester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The emails detail how Boikov&#8217;s Sydney-based wife applied for at least three rounds of legal aid from Pravfond and the organisation helped him at least once, paying thousands of dollars in legal fees to his Sydney solicitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They also showed Pravfond successfully pushed for Boikov&#8217;s Russian citizenship \u2014 publicly confirmed in a 2023 decree from President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Asked why, given Pravfond&#8217;s alleged intelligence ties and prior support of the likes of Viktor Bout and Vadim Krasikov, he thought it was appropriate to apply for funding, Boikov said he was unaware of these facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know about this fund \u2026 but even if I knew, even if I knew [them], I had no problems, because I think they&#8217;re all heroes. They&#8217;re my compatriots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think Viktor Bout&#8217;s a great guy \u2026 he&#8217;s fantastic. He&#8217;s a patriot.
