The No.2 seed was one of the favourites for the title – but she has become the highest ranked player to lose thus far.

Gauff and Yastramska were originally scheduled to play their tie on Centre Court. But they were moved to Court 1 because Novak Djokovic‘s clash with Alexandre Muller did not get underway until 7pm, due to Alexander Zverev going five sets against Arthur Rinderknech.

Yastremska has Grand Slam pedigree and isn’t an unknown entity. She reached the Australian Open semi-finals last year and the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019.

But this was still a major upset here on Wimbledon second biggest arena.

Yastremska earned her first two breakpoints while leading 3-2 and a backhand winner down the line converted at the first attempt.

The same shot got her out of trouble in the following game as Gauff threatened to break straight back.

Yastremska saw her first set point come and go at 5-4, double-faulting for deuce. Gauff won the following two points to break back, and it felt like the momentum might start to shift.

But it was the Ukrainian who delivered the braver shots in the tiebreak, dropping just three points, as she edge the mamoth 57-minute set. However, the second set was over in just 21 minutes.

Yastremska continued the pressure at the start of the second set and led 15-40 in the opening game. She wasted the first breakpoint with a forehand volley that landed well wide, but Gauff gifted her the second with a backhand slice into the net.

It was an error-sewn beginning to the second for Gauff, with another unforced error into the net gifting Yastremska a 2-0 lead.

Yastremska earned a double break advantage later on to send Gauff packing in one hour and 18 minutes.

“First what I want to say is this court brings me a lot of nice memories because I have played here in the junior finals,” the world No.42 said on court. “I think it was a great match today, I was really on fire.

“Playing against Coco is really something special. I have played against her four times, it is 3-1 to her.

“She is a great person, and we have a really good relationship. I enjoyed it a lot, and these courts are made for the greatest players. I am very grateful to be on this court.”

To be the first to receive the latest Wimbledon news, join our WhatsApp community or Wimbledon newsletter

Coco Gauff suffered a shock defeat against Dayana Yastremska to crash out of Wimbledon in the opening round.…

[2
748,6740,39074,393,4884,12,1144,712,90634,16,15,1764,5068,90633
0":"post-230553","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-coco-gauff","10":"tag-dayana-yastremska","11":"tag-england","12":"tag-great-britain","13":"tag-news","14":"tag-northern-ireland","15":"tag-scotland","16":"tag-shock-defeat","17":"tag-uk","18":"tag-united-kingdom","19":"tag-wales","20":"tag-wimbledon","21":"tag-wimbledon-2023
["GET
