{"id":230899,"date":"2025-07-02T02:52:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T02:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/230899\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T02:52:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T02:52:11","slug":"uk-and-germany-ready-mutual-defense-treaty-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/230899\/","title":{"rendered":"UK and Germany ready mutual defense treaty \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Key chapters include one devoted to defense, building on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uk-germany-trinity-house-agreement-on-defence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trinity House Agreement<\/a> signed last year, which sets out that any strategic threat to one country would represent a threat to the other.<\/p>\n<p>This would give Germany a mutual assistance clause with both of Europe\u2019s nuclear powers, in line with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz\u2019s desire to strengthen the continent\u2019s deterrent separately from the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the treaty will likely reaffirm the commitment of both nations to NATO as the cornerstone of their collective defense, the clause\u2019s inclusion underlines the push for European allies to work more closely on security as the U.S. pulls back from the transatlantic defense alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The document is expected to contain further measures on tackling illegal migration, transportation, and research and innovation. It is also set to feature a commitment to promote cross-border exchanges \u2014 an extremely thorny area for Starmer\u2019s government as he faces pressure to reduce both legal and illegal migration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/12793062-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6845133\"  \/>PM Keir Starmer and former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz laid the groundwork for the pact in a joint declaration last summer, promising closer cooperation on peace and security and economic growth. | Pool Photo by Tolga Akmen via EPA<\/p>\n<p>Any concrete agreement on youth mobility will be negotiated at the EU level, after the U.K. was unable to reach an agreement on this area as part of the \u201creset\u201d agreed in May.
