Then, according to physical therapist and yoga teacher Lara Heimann, you want to maintain strength and muscle mass, because these are some of the best predictors of good health later in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuscle mass plays a vital role in maintaining independence, mobility, and even brain health, says Heimann. \u201cThe more we strengthen with intention, the more we give our future selves the gift of vitality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heimann, creator of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/lytyoga.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/lytyoga.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">LYT Method<\/a>, has built her practice around injury prevention, longevity and maintaining functional movement, and she shared four exercises for readers to try.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Heimann has chosen these exercises because they benefit your mobility, strength, coordination and the health of your nervous system, all of which are vital for healthy aging.<\/p>\n<p>At-home exercises for longevity<\/p>\n<p>Heimann recommends doing one or two sets of these exercises twice a day for maximum benefit. They don\u2019t take long, so you can slip them in while your coffee brews or while you\u2019re waiting for something to cook.<\/p>\n<p>1. Bear crawl hold<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sets:<\/strong> 1-2<strong> Time: <\/strong>20-30sec<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get on your hands and knees, with your back straight.<\/li>\n<li>Lift your knees just off the floor and hold for time, making sure your lower back doesn\u2019t sag.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why Heimann recommends it: <\/strong>This exercise <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/how-to\/how-to-engage-your-core\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/how-to\/how-to-engage-your-core\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engages the core,<\/a> improves shoulder strength and cross-body coordination, and activates neural pathways essential for brain-body health.<\/p>\n<p>3. Lateral lunge<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sets:<\/strong> 1-2 <strong>Reps:<\/strong> 10-15 each side<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your arms by your sides.<\/li>\n<li>Take a big step to the left with your left foot.<\/li>\n<li>Bend your left knee and sit your hips back to lower.<\/li>\n<li>Push through your left foot to return to the start, then repeat on the other side.<\/li>\n<li>Continue, alternating sides with each rep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why Heimann recommends it:<\/strong> This exercise strengthens the hips and legs, improves balance and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/proprioception\" data-url=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/proprioception\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">proprioception<\/a>, and supports fall prevention by training lateral movement.<\/p>\n<p>4.
