Spain\u2019s Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, has been stuck for months in negotiations with Brussels<\/strong> over the fifth payment of the Next Gen EU funds, totaling \u20ac23.9 billion: \u20ac8 billion in grants and \u20ac15.9 billion in soft loans.<\/p>\n

Because Pedro S\u00e1nchez\u2019s government did not request the loans from Brussels until March 2023, Spain has only received \u20ac47.96 billion in grants and \u20ac340 million in loans<\/strong> so far. This means a mere 30% of the \u20ac163 billion<\/strong> in Next Gen funds allocated to Spain.<\/p>\n

In its latest diagnostic report on the state of the Spanish economy, the Brussels Executive already warned that \u201cit is essential for Spain to accelerate the implementation of reforms and investments<\/strong>,\u201d given that the non-extendable deadline expires in August 2026\u2014in just 13 months.<\/p>\n

However, S\u00e1nchez\u2019s government still has not met one of the most important milestones required by the EU in exchange for the fifth payment: the \u2018diesel tax hike\u2019<\/strong> to equalize its taxation with that of gasoline, a commitment blocked by a lack of parliamentary support.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s situation contrasts sharply with that of Italy<\/strong>, which has just secured its seventh disbursement of funds worth \u20ac18.3 billion (\u20ac4.6 billion in grants and \u20ac13.7 billion in loans).
