{"id":232013,"date":"2025-07-02T12:45:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T12:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/232013\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T12:45:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T12:45:15","slug":"as-we-celebrate-20-years-of-the-iron-men-on-crosby-beach-heres-20-things-you-might-not-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/232013\/","title":{"rendered":"As we celebrate 20 years of the Iron Men on Crosby Beach, here\u2019s 20 things you might not know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we celebrate 20 years of the Iron Men on Crosby Beach, here\u2019s 20 things you might not know | The Guide Liverpool\t<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lozad\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/9d79162a-3310-41bd-b477-8d1d23ec7825-scaled-e1751459748880.jpeg\" alt=\"As we celebrate 20 years of the Iron Men on Crosby Beach, here\u2019s 20 things you might not know\"\/><br \/>\nCredit: Ron Davies<\/p>\n<p>This week marks 20 years since the Iron Men arrived on Crosby Beach and in the last two decades Antony Gormley\u2019s amazing \u2018Another Place\u2019 sculptures have been a massive part of our celebrations and windswept strolls.<\/p>\n<p>Decked in footie scarves they\u2019ve helped commemorate our cup and league successes and strung with tinsel they\u2019ve announced to sea and shore that it\u2019s Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>In more reflective times, they\u2019ve shared our secrets and been a focal point for our thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/shutterstock_694121764.jpg\" alt=\"Crosby Beach - Another Place\" class=\"wp-image-71723\"  \/>Crosby Beach \u2013 Another Place<br \/>\nThe Iron Men were revealed to the public on July 1, 2005 \u2013 and even after 20 years, here\u2019s 20 things you might not know \u2026<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are 100 figures, each weighing 650kg \u2013 or 1,433lbs!<\/li>\n<li>Each statue is 6ft 4in tall and made from 17 body casts of Antony Gormley himself.<\/li>\n<li>Before they arrived here, the Iron Men were seasoned travellers \u2013 Another Place had been shown in Cuxhaven in Germany; Stavanger in Norway and De Panne, Belgium, before finding their forever home on the Sefton coast.<\/li>\n<li>The Iron Men were erected at Crosby Beach as a temporary installation, but we loved them so much a public campaign was mounted to keep them here.<\/li>\n<li>Two foundries cast the Iron Men \u2013 Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax, and Joseph and Jesse Siddons in West Bromwich.<\/li>\n<li>Another Place was due to move to New York after Crosby.<\/li>\n<li>The figures stretch across 3km of sand (or around 1.8 miles) with a distance between of around 150 and 250 paces.<\/li>\n<li>Beneath every Iron Man is one-metre pile foundations to keep them securely in place on the beach.<\/li>\n<li>It took contractors three weeks to lift every Iron Man into place.<\/li>\n<li>Each sculpture is standing in a similar way, either carrying tension or relaxed in their postures.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking in 2005, Antony Gormley said the installation was the poetic response to the individual and universal sentiments associated with emigration \u2013 sadness at leaving, but the hope of a new future in Another Place.<\/li>\n<li>The movement of local tides and daily weather conditions dictate whether the figures are visible or submerged.<\/li>\n<li>There isn\u2019t a \u2018best time\u2019 to see the Iron Men. But, as a rough guide, if there is a tide of around 9-10 metres they will be submerged for an hour or so either side of the high tide and access to the beach isn\u2019t possible.
