The actress, perhaps best known to audiences as Ted Lasso\u2018s Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, is doing press for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/brad-pitt\/\" id=\"auto-tag_brad-pitt_1\" data-tag=\"brad-pitt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brad Pitt<\/a>-led F1 movie, the high-octane, high-budget sport thriller currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/box-office-preview-f1-to-leave-m3gan-2-0-1236299120\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dominating the U.S. and global box office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI can\u2019t really complain,\u201d she says of her jam-packed calendar. \u201cI\u2019ve had these films coming out and the excitement around them\u2026 I\u2019m living the dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/f1-movie-toughest-critics-real-life-racing-fans-1236261794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F1<\/a> \u2014\u00a0filmed at real-life Formula One races across the 2024 season \u2014 Niles stars as the gentle and wise Bernadette. Mother to Pitt\u2019s co-star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/damson-idris\/\" id=\"auto-tag_damson-idris_1\" data-tag=\"damson-idris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Damson Idris<\/a>, playing Joshua Pearce, her role is a welcome break from the thrilling, nail-biting speed of a movie dedicated to emphasizing the sport\u2019s extremes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSonny Hayes (Pitt) joins Javier Bardem\u2019s APXGP, a flailing F1 team whose survival depends on one small feat: winning a race. When driver-turned-businessman Ruben Cervantes (Bardem) calls in a favor to his former teammate, all eyes are on Hayes to deliver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThere are, of course, the hurdles: a \u201cshitbox\u201d car not performing as technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon) would like it to, a promising but immature young driver (Idris) defiantly working against, and not with, his teammate, as well as a board that wants to cut its losses and sell up before APXGP loses any more money. The film hits all the right story beats while delivering on the rip-roaring action sequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how they managed to capture F1, but they did,\u201d Niles says of the team-up between director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. \u201cI was a bit worried about people going, especially hardcore fans. [I thought], \u2018Are they really going to like this?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHer fears went unrealized. Below, Niles talks to THR about seeing Pitt and Idris in painstaking rehearsal mode, understanding her character with the help of seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and sitting behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/tom-cruise\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tom-cruise_1\" data-tag=\"tom-cruise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Cruise<\/a> at the film\u2019s gargantuan London premiere: \u201cI thought, \u2018If Tom Cruise is on the edge of his seat, you know you\u2019ve got a winner here.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>You must be a busy woman right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI am. I can\u2019t really complain. It\u2019s a wonderful place to be in. I\u2019ve had these films coming out and the excitement around them\u2026 [I\u2019m] living the dream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Were you an F1 fan before this movie came into your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNo, I wasn\u2019t! When I was growing up, it used to be on sometimes on a Saturday and I could hear the cars going. [But] I didn\u2019t know anything about the sport. I didn\u2019t think it was for me. And I love sports, so when I went for the audition, my manager was like, \u201cIt\u2019s called F1 and Brad Pitt\u2019s attached.\u201d That was all the information, and possibly there\u2019s a character that may have one scene. I was like, \u201cOK.\u201d When I got the scenes to audition for, I met with [director] Joe Kosinksi and [producer] Jerry [Bruckheimer]. And Jerry said to me, \u201cYou need to watch Drive to Survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>What was your immediate reaction to DTS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI was blown away. I love the fast pace of it. You get the snippets of their dedication and what they put their bodies through to be the best they can be. It\u2019s just fascinating. It\u2019s got so much fire in it, drama. And the film, you\u2019re on the edge of your seat.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FotoJet-2025-07-01T115806.344.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSarah Niles and Damson Idris in F1.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWarner Bros. Pictures Publicity<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>It\u2019s a thrilling watch. At the same time, you have one of the softest and more gentle characters to balance that out. What was it you liked about Bernadette?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI approached it as it was. I was like, \u201cOK, she\u2019s playing a mum.\u201d I was in a couple of scenes when I first read the script. Then, when I got in the room and met Joe, I loved his work, I think he\u2019s a brilliant director, having seen Top Gun: Maverick,\u00a0and then Jerry Bruckheimer\u2026 I grew up watching so many of his films. We had a conversation about this character. They had a real understanding of what she was like and the relationship she may have had with [Joshua\u2019s] father. There\u2019s all this background information they had. She\u2019s Caribbean, she works in a medical profession. I was thinking maybe she works as a nurse or something to do with emergencies so she would understand about being in those spaces of trauma. She\u2019d understand how to take care of her son. Then, the relationship with her husband, Joshua\u2019s dad, who passed away, she would understand caring for him\u2026 [Kosinski] was very specific about making sure this character wasn\u2019t just, \u201cOh, I\u2019m a mum and really miserable and worried about my son.\u201d She has agency. You can tell she\u2019s not afraid to put Joshua down. She\u2019s not afraid to tease him. She makes a comment about Sonny being a good-looking man. She\u2019s a bit cheeky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYou have to have this mother who roots things because everything\u2019s high-energy, high-octane. The stress levels and excitement \u2014\u00a0you have to have something that grounds it to understand where this person comes from. Joshua\u2019s character says, \u201cI climbed a mountain to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Your performance was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/f1-the-movie-review-brad-pitt-damson-idris-joseph-kosinski-1236291870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described by our THR critic<\/a> as a standout.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t[Smiles.] Yeah. When I read Sonny\u2019s character, and I understood the complexities of this man, then I thought, \u201cOK, I need to be in this.\u201d I need to [show] what the complexities are for the families [of drivers]. As much as it is their sons putting their bodies through it, being dedicated and focused, it\u2019s the families that help to drive you as well. They help to push you. They know you at your lowest point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Did you speak to some of the drivers or their families?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI was lucky enough to speak to Sir Lewis Hamilton. And from the get-go, Joe was like, \u201cI\u2019m gonna get you to have a conversation with Lewis.\u201d And he sat with me, we talked and Joe left us to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLewis was really open about his upbringing. In my opinion, he\u2019s one of the most successful racers. He\u2019s not only the best driver, he\u2019s the best-dressed. He\u2019s got a whole brand. And him talking about his upbringing and his sacrifices that his dad had to make \u2014 financially, he was not part of that world. I was like, these are the things that I can bring into this. I\u2019m not part of that world. I come from a working-class background. But that\u2019s not a limitation. How do you occupy those spaces? Having that really solidified it for me, and gave me so much information for how I could create this character. He was saying his dad was Grenadian\u2026 I just thought to myself, \u201cThis character has to be Bajan.\u201d My parents are from Barbados, and it\u2019s a very small island. I thought Bernadette has to be coming from a place that\u2019s different to what we usually see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>And there is that significance of Lewis being the first Black F1 driver. We see it with Joshua\u2019s character, too. An element of having to work harder to get here.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYeah, yeah. And what I love about the way Damson portrays Joshua is time has moved on. At the end he is like, \u201cThat\u2019s who I am. I\u2019ve occupied this space. I\u2019m not apologizing for anything. I\u2019m stepping into my power.\u201d But he\u2019s moving with it. He understands where he\u2019s come from, and he\u2019s just going forward. It feels very 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t[Lewis] has so much more to achieve as well. He\u2019s really changed the game. Even watching him in Drive to Survive, how he talks about the car, how he\u2019s studying it. When they\u2019re having a debrief about a race, it\u2019s not just about being able to drive a car really fast. You have to strategize. You have to know where you went wrong. Kerry\u2019s character talks about the car: \u201cI\u2019m not out there. I need information from you about what it feels like in order to change and improve it.\u201d They have to know all about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Had you met or worked with Damson before this film?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI met Damson once, socially, like just by accident. But I never met him [properly]. He\u2019s got a real drive and focus, and it works really well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Is he quite similar to Joshua, the character?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNo, he\u2019s not. He\u2019s from south London, which I am from as well, and he\u2019s got a real kind of: \u201cThis is my time. This is my space. I\u2019m going to just work hard for it.\u201d He and Brad were really going through [it] in rehearsals. I got to watch them race and I think the one time I saw Damson make a mistake, he was just like [drops head]. Pictures Publicity<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>What was that like, being privy to Damson and Brad\u2019s relationship off-camera and the immense amount of research they were doing for these roles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt was great. I met Brad at a read-through. His energy, the way he came up to me and said he loved me and Ted Lasso. He wasn\u2019t afraid to tell me how much he loved the show and loved me in it. That\u2019s how he carried himself. He\u2019s very open. And when you got someone like that as your number one, I told him this at the London premiere. I said: \u201cWhen your number one cast member is open and kind and wants to do well, everybody wants to follow suit, right?\u201d That\u2019s what you need to have. He\u2019s the captain of the ship and he\u2019s steering it. And then Damson, too\u2026 I really had to pinch myself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>What\u2019s it like on a Joseph Kosinski set?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s amazing. You\u2019ve got the best of the best, really, when you\u2019ve got, Jerry as a producer [too]. He\u2019s an architect. He understands this is the landscape and how it\u2019s going to be understood by those receiving it. He\u2019s very, very clever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Is it safe to say you\u2019re an F1 fan now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOh, yeah, definitely. 100 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>It must have been so difficult to film in parts \u2014\u00a0at the actual races<\/strong> <strong>\u2014\u00a0did you get to go to any?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI was at [Silverstone, the British Grand Prix]. I was watching behind Joe. He was generous enough to let me sit behind him while he was filming. And you could feel, through to the paddock, the spectators, it\u2019s what you\u2019d imagine ancient Greece was like. It\u2019s theater. Everybody there is high-energy. And I remember watching when they did the national anthem, it\u2019s crazy how they did it. You can see Brad and Damson standing there. There was a moment when the two of them just started walking and they were playing \u201cWe Will Rock You.\u201d At that point, I think it was the first or second day I\u2019d been on set, and I hadn\u2019t really filmed anything. I just said, \u201cThis film, I can tell, is going to be a hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI don\u2019t how they managed to [capture F1] but they did. I was a bit worried about people, especially hardcore fans. [I thought], \u201cAre they really going to like this?\u201d But [the drivers] really have a dedication to wanting to do it well. Seeing how many laps they do, seeing the turning points, there\u2019s so much in it that they\u2019ve managed to capture about Formula One.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>There is, it has been said, this fighter pilot level of bravery<\/strong> <strong>in the sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd that\u2019s where Joe comes into it. Because when you watch Top Gun: Maverick, you understand the pressures of flying those planes. Then you understand Formula One and the pressures of driving something which could ultimately could kill you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the London premiere, I sat behind Tom Cruise. And Tom Cruise was on the edge of the seat from the get-go. He was watching it like this: [leans forward]. Luckily, I\u2019d seen it before so I was able to be a bit more relaxed. But even I found new things in the film I hadn\u2019t realized before. And I thought, \u201cIf Tom Cruise is on the edge of his seat, you know you\u2019ve got a winner here.\u201d He\u2019s the ultimate entertainer. He was so cool. He said, \u201cHey, how you doing?\u201d He said hello to my friends and the people in our row. I work with the Fantastic Four. It\u2019s a great cast. I can\u2019t wait for people to see it.
