Sam Horsfield revealed the extent of his nightmare day during final qualifying The Open on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Englishman was disqualified from the event<\/a> at West Lancashire having ended his first round after just nine holes.<\/p>\n

Horsfield called it a day after shooting a seven-over-par 43 in a disastrous start to his last bid for a spot at Royal Portrush.<\/p>\n

Players hoping to secure their space in the year’s final Major competed across four final qualifying events on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

A total of 20 places in the field were on offer, with the top five from each venue earning an entry.<\/p>\n

Competitors played 36 holes across two rounds on the same day to complete the field in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

Horsfield was not one of them as he abruptly left the course by ending his two rounds after just nine holes.<\/p>\n

He was ultimately disqualified as a result, having failed to notify officials he was retiring.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old lifted the lid on his nightmare round on Wednesday as he spoke to Hawksbee & Jacobs.<\/p>\n

Horsfield explained: “I had probably some of the worst hours of my life.<\/p>\n

“So we flew back, we had an event in Dallas last week, landed Monday 4pm and went up to West Lancs.<\/p>\n

“I was a little worried about jet lag but at 10.30, 11 o\u2019clock-ish the fire alarm (went off). So we all had to go outside.<\/p>\n

“It was 5.30, 6am alarm, it was the top three worst I\u2019ve ever felt on a golf course.”<\/p>\n

He proved to be one of five players at West Lancashire not to finish their round, with four of those disqualified.<\/p>\n

A score of five-under-par was ultimately enough to claim one of the spots from the qualifying venue.<\/p>\n

However, that was only after a four-man play-off saw Richard Teder and Oliver Lindell claim the final two berths.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Horsfield will have to wait at least another year to make a return to The Open.<\/p>\n

His best performance came on debut back in 2021 as he finished tied for 67th.<\/p>\n

The LIV Golf star has made two further appearances, most recently last year, but missed the cut on both occasions.<\/p>\n
