{"id":233351,"date":"2025-07-03T00:35:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T00:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/233351\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T00:35:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T00:35:12","slug":"pace-of-ida-sponsored-investment-accelerates-despite-threat-of-us-tariffs-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/233351\/","title":{"rendered":"Pace of IDA-sponsored investment accelerates despite threat of US tariffs \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The flow of multinational investment into Ireland accelerated in the first six months of 2025 despite the uncertainty around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\">US tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ida-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ida-ireland\/\">IDA Ireland\u2019s<\/a> latest half-year report said the agency supported 179 investments in the six months to June with the potential to create more than 10,000 jobs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The level of investments was 37 per cent up on the same period last year and also up on the 8,900 job commitments delivered for the six-month period last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">IDA Ireland chief Michael Lohan later confirmed that around 65 per cent of the investments were by US firms, slightly higher than last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The agency\u2019s figures come a week before US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> is due to reimpose steep tariffs on EU goods imports, a move that could seriously disrupt transatlantic trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Mr Trump has threatened to apply a 50 per cent import tax on most EU imports from July 9th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Asked if he thought 10 per cent tariffs on EU exports to the US with carve-outs for the pharma and semiconductor sectors represented a win for Ireland, a position that many inside the talks is now looking more likely, Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke said he did not see \u201cany tariff as a win\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">A new 10 per cent tariff baseline would representative an additional level of tariffs for many businesses in the agri-food sector here and that would be a \u201cconcern,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cTariffs are bad. They constrain supply. They cause supply chain shortages and in essence make goods more expensive for consumers in both countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The IDA said 52 of the investments announced so far this year \u201cwill be new or first-time investments into the country\u201d while 43 are research, development and innovation (RD&amp;I) projects, \u201creflecting Ireland\u2019s growing international reputation as a location for cutting edge innovation\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The FDI sector here now employs over 302,000 workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">A further 41 investments will be expansions from existing client companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cToday\u2019s figures demonstrate Ireland\u2019s continued attractiveness as a trusted partner and a proven investment location, speaking to our many strengths in areas such as innovation and talent as well as our stable, pro-enterprise business landscape,\u201d Mr Lohan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cIt also points to our resilience in the face of continuing global economic uncertainty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The IDA\u2019s report highlighted stability and access to skilled workers, \u201ccoupled with the country\u2019s position as a strategic hub for technological innovation\u201d as primary reasons for companies to locate in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">It also flagged several high-profile investments including Squarespace,<b> <\/b>the design-driven platform that helps entrepreneurs build brands, which has announced the creation of over 120 new jobs in Dublin and health data company<b> <\/b>Datavant,<b> <\/b>which opened its global R&amp;D centre in Galway that is to employ up to 125 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Other companies this year have taken decisions to invest significantly in their existing Irish operations, it said, noting these included healthcare company GE HealthCare, which is investing \u20ac132 million in expanding and upgrading its Cork facility and Ericsson,<b> <\/b>which announced a \u20ac200 million RD&amp;I investment in Athlone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The flow of multinational investment into Ireland accelerated in the first six months of 2025 despite the uncertainty&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":233352,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3090],"tags":[51,1700,91494,16,15,2612,596],"class_list":{"0":"post-233351","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-economy","10":"tag-ida-ireland","11":"tag-uk","12":"tag-united-kingdom","13":"tag-us-tariffs","14":"tag-work"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114786502193043144","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233351","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=233351"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233351\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/233352"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=233351"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=233351"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=233351"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
