Queen Elizabeth II<\/strong>\u2019s cousin reportedly believed that Meghan Markle<\/strong>\u2019s father, Thomas Markle<\/strong>, had reservations about attending her wedding to Prince Harry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Before her 2020 death, the late Lady Elizabeth Anson<\/strong> \u2014 Queen Elizabeth\u2019s first cousin once removed \u2014 shared her perspective in conversations with royal author Sally Bedell Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In a story that was published by The Times<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday, July 1, Smith revealed Anson once told her \u201cthat Meghan\u2019s father, Thomas Markle, was \u2018frightened of coming to the wedding,\u2019\u201d referring to the royal nuptials<\/a> between Meghan, 43, and Harry, 40 \u2014 although no explanation why was given.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the wedding, Anson reportedly asked Queen Elizabeth if it seemed \u201crather odd for Meghan to be arriving with her mother\u201d Doria Ragland<\/strong>. Anson also explained that since Thomas was unable to \u201cdo steps,\u201d he planned to enter through a side door and meet his daughter at the chapel\u2019s main entrance.<\/p>\n

In May 2018, Thomas, now 80, was caught posing for photos for paparazzi and it was ultimately revealed that he had struck a deal with a photo agency. Around that same time, he told TMZ<\/a> he suffered a heart attack and was opting not to attend. King Charles <\/strong>\u2014 then Prince Charles \u2014 accompanied Meghan to the altar.<\/p>\n

As Star previously reported<\/a>, Queen Elizabeth was allegedly \u201cdismayed\u201d that Harry reached out to the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the ceremony in St George\u2019s Chapel without getting permission from the Dean of Windsor first leading up to the couple\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n

According to Bedell Smith, Anson \u2014 who had asked to be called Liza \u2014 said, \u201c[Prince] Harry wrote to me and said they were going another way. He said, \u2018I am close to my grandmother, and she is content with this. When I spoke with the Queen, she said she is not at all content.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith continued that Liza \u201cadded, \u2018Meghan could turn into nothing but trouble. She sees things in a different way<\/a>.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Harry and Meghan have continued to forge their own path<\/a>, notably stepping down from their duties as senior working royals in 2020 just two years before Elizabeth died in September 2022.<\/p>\n
