{"id":234503,"date":"2025-07-03T10:50:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T10:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/234503\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T10:50:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T10:50:09","slug":"waratahs-team-v-bi-lions-taniela-tupou-to-start-in-tour-clash-planet-rugby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/234503\/","title":{"rendered":"Waratahs team v B&#038;I Lions: Taniela Tupou to start in tour clash : Planet Rugby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Wallabies stars Taniela Tupou and Andrew Kellaway have been named in the Waratahs\u2019 starting line-up for their clash against the British &amp; Irish Lions in Sydney on Saturday.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Tupou and Kellaway were released from Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt\u2019s squad for the eagerly anticipated encounter with the famous touring team and are amongst seven Australian internationals included in the Waratahs\u2019 matchday 23.<\/p>\n<p>The other Wallabies in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/waratahs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waratahs<\/a> head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/Dan-McKellar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan McKellar<\/a>\u2018s squad are Lalakai Foketi, Darby Lancaster, Rob Leota, Matt Philip and Tane Edmed.<\/p>\n<p>Kellaway has been named to start on the right wing in an exciting back three alongside Lawson Creighton and Lancaster, who will line up at full-back and on the left wing respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Foketi will form a midfield combination with Joey Walton with Jack Bowen and Teddy Wilson getting the nod as the starting half-backs.<\/p>\n<p>Hugh Sinclair named as captain<\/p>\n<p>In the forwards, veteran loose forward Hugh Sinclair has been named as the side\u2019s captain and will start at number eight while Charlie Gamble and Leota join him in the back-row as the two flankers.<\/p>\n<p>Miles Amatosero and Fergus Lee-Warner have been selected to start in the second-row while Ethan Dobbins will pack down in the front-row at hooker alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/Taniela-Tupou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tupou<\/a> and Tom Lambert, who are the starting props.<\/p>\n<p>McKellar has opted for a traditional five\/three split on his replacements bench with Mahe Vailanu, Jack Barrett, Daniel Botha, Philip and Jamie Adamson serving as back-up for the forwards, while Jack Grant, Edmed and Henry O\u2019Donnell will cover for the starting backs.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s clash with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tournament\/British-and-Irish-Lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lions<\/a> will be a special occasion for long-serving back-rower Sinclair as he will lead the Waratahs out in what will be the last game of his professional rugby career.<\/p>\n<p>McKellar acknowledged the unique weight of this week\u2019s team selection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big game. Everyone wants to play in it. Like every week, the boys all want to be involved,\u201d he told reporters after a Waratahs training session on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/british-and-irish-lions-first-nations-pasifika-xv-reveal-first-five-players-including-wallabies-great-kurtley-beale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>British and Irish Lions: First Nations &amp; Pasifika XV reveal first five players including Wallabies great Kurtley Beale<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been some tough decisions, as always; but we are comfortable with the 23 that we have got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The return of current Wallabies squad members Tupou and Kellaway has bolstered the Waratahs line-up.<\/p>\n<p>The experienced duo were released back to the Waratahs by the Wallabies this week, giving McKellar valuable experience to call on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNela at scrum time and Kells\u2019 experience on both sides of the ball.
