{"id":234852,"date":"2025-07-03T13:49:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T13:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/234852\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T13:49:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T13:49:11","slug":"2025-tour-de-france-gets-extended-safety-zones-for-seven-stages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/234852\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 Tour de France gets extended safety zones for seven stages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Riders in this year&#8217;s Tour de France will benefit from extended safety zones on seven stages of the race, the UCI announced today.<\/p>\n<p>It means that instead of the usual three-kilometre buffer at the end of each stage, there will be zones of up to five kilometres from the finish line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">This year&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tour de France<\/a> runs from July 5-27, starting on Saturday in Lille and finishing in Paris with a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/changing-the-final-tour-de-france-stage-in-paris-is-an-exciting-prospect-but-i-think-it-should-be-for-one-year-only\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/changing-the-final-tour-de-france-stage-in-paris-is-an-exciting-prospect-but-i-think-it-should-be-for-one-year-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special Montmartre stage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The safety zones, however long they are, are designed to reduce the danger to riders in lead-up to the final push for the line, taking the pressure off the peloton as a whole to finish at the same time as the winner and let the sprinters do their thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">It also means that if a rider does crash or suffer a mechanical in the run-in to the line, they will not pay a time penalty \u2013 although a rule tweak introduced this season means that if a rider crashes solo, they won&#8217;t benefit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><strong>The stages given extra buffer zones in the <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-watched-all-of-season-three-of-netflixs-tour-de-france-series-these-are-the-six-things-that-surprised-me\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-watched-all-of-season-three-of-netflixs-tour-de-france-series-these-are-the-six-things-that-surprised-me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tour de France<\/strong><\/a><strong> this year are: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><strong>Stage 1: <\/strong>Lille &gt; Valence, +5km<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><strong>Stage 21:<\/strong> Mantes-la-Ville &gt; Paris Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, +5km<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">This means the race will be bookended with extra safety measures, from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/the-2025-tour-de-france-route-is-a-british-fans-dream-how-to-watch-the-french-grand-tour\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/the-2025-tour-de-france-route-is-a-british-fans-dream-how-to-watch-the-french-grand-tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand D\u00e9part in Lille<\/a> to the special 50th anniversary final stage in Paris, which takes in three ascents of the C\u00f4te de la Butte de Montmartre and could be trickier than usual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">It&#8217;s also not a great surprise to see the extra safety zones weighted in favour of the first part of the race, which is generally the most nervous and carries the highest crash potential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The extra measures come at the recommendation of the SafeR initiative, which involves representatives from the UCI as well as groups representing organisers, teams and riders, including the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/formula-1-stopped-its-drivers-dying-what-is-professional-cycling-doing-to-stop-serious-crashes\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/formula-1-stopped-its-drivers-dying-what-is-professional-cycling-doing-to-stop-serious-crashes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cyclistes Professionels Associ\u00e9s<\/a> (CPA) and CPA Women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">It was part of a wider raft of measures and updates from SafeR which includes the testing of maximum gear ratios to curb &#8220;extreme speeds&#8221;
