Expect the Danish presidency to try to push ahead with this process as much as they can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The second is <strong>her language on migration<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/jul\/03\/europe-heatwave-live-news-latest-updates-crete-wildfire?page=with%3Ablock-686677438f08717e1adfe26c#block-686677438f08717e1adfe26c\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14:35<\/a>). We keep hearing similar strongly worded declarations from more and more leaders, with the new German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, also taking a similar stance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Von der Leyen\u2019s response was fairly weak, but expect much more pressure to come from the member states to tighten the existing system even further.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Trump confirms Putin call to take place today \u2013 Europe live&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/jul\/03\/europe-heatwave-live-news-latest-updates-crete-wildfire?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-68667e288f085e912e5fddbe#block-68667e288f085e912e5fddbe\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1v00ko5\">Share<\/a>Denmark&#8217;s Frederiksen throws her support behind Ukraine&#8217;s accession to EU<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Asked about Ukraine, <strong>Frederiksen<\/strong> again shows the Kyiv administration with praise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">She says it is \u201cextremely impressive\u201d that a country at war can \u201cnot only produce better, faster and cheaper than the rest of us, \u2026 for example drones, but also [is] on the path to a membership of the European Union, \u2026 able to make reforms and concrete steps forward, even though they are at war.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-w9py1s\">\n<p>\u201cI think they are doing their part. There are still a lot of decisions that have to be made before \u2026 a real membership, <strong class=\"dcr-in3yi3\">but they are really doing their homework.
