New &#8216;ultra-catchy Frankenstein&#8217; variant has rocketed four-fold in just a month&#8230;experts warn it could be most infectious yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-226\/john-ely.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JOHN ELY DEPUTY HEALTH EDITOR FOR MAILONLINE<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  11:51 EDT, 3 July 2025   |  Updated:  12:14 EDT, 3 July 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A new Covid variant dubbed &#8216;Stratus&#8217; has soared to dominance in the UK, with experts warning it could drive a wave of new infections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Stratus\u2014scientifically known as XFG\u2014is thought to be more infectious than previous Covid strains due to mutations that help it evade the immune system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now, data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), shows Stratus has now become the dominant Covid strain in England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The variant has gone from accounting for about 10 per cent of all Covid cases in May to almost 40 per cent three weeks later in mid-June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Stratus\u2014a descendent of the already super virulent Omicron\u2014is what is known as a Frankenstein or &#8216;recombinant&#8217; strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This means it emerged when a person was infected with two Covid strains at once which then became a new hybrid variant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University, told MailOnline both two strains of Stratus\u2014the original XFG and spin off called\u00a0XFG.3\u2014 are &#8216;rapidly spreading&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The increased competitiveness of XFG and XFG.3 is likely due to new spike mutations which make these variants more able to evade the immune response,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-2b873cccaab9aa3f\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/99112751-14872477-A_highly_contagious_Covid_variant_is_on_the_rise_in_the_UK_with_-a-1_1751556550926.jpeg\" height=\"353\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Stratus\u00bftechnically called XFG\u00bfis thought to be more infectious than previous Covid strains due to mutations its developed that help it evade the immune system. Stock image\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Given that immunity to Covid is waning in the population due to a decline in uptake of the spring booster jab and the reduction of Covid infections in recent months, more people will be susceptible to infection with XFG and XFG.3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;This could lead to a new wave of infection but it\u2019s difficult to predict the extent of this wave.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, he added that there is currently no evidence Stratus causes more severe illness and getting a Covid vaccine was &#8216;very likely&#8217; to offer\u00a0protection from severe illness and hospitalisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Stratus&#8217; rise comes just a week after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the strain a &#8216;variant under monitoring\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This designation means health authorities across the globe have been asked to help track the variant due its rising spread in different countries and the potential public health implications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Whilst assessing the overall risk of Stratus as &#8216;low&#8217; the WHO said evidence pointed to the variant having significant growth advantage compared to other strains with it now accounting for 22 per cent of cases recorded globally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Nimbus\u2014another new Covid variant also <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-14787409\/Covid-warning-Nimbus-variant-summer-cases.html\" rel=\"noopener\">tipped to drive a wave of new infections<\/a>\u2014has also soared in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">That strain has gone from just 2 per cent of cases in April to 17 per cent in June, according to UKHSA data.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-18547aa85e91986a\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/56195471-14872477-Symptoms_of_Nimbus_do_not_appear_to_differ_from_other_Covid_vari-a-2_1751556574633.jpeg\" height=\"381\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Symptoms of Nimbus do not appear to differ from other Covid variants and include fatigue, fever, muscle ache and a sore throat\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Symptoms of Nimbus do not appear to differ from other Covid variants and include fatigue, fever, muscle ache and a sore throat\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, overall Covid cases are on the decline compared to recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Just 5.4 per cent of Covid tests analysed by UKHSA in the week ending June 29 were positive for the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This is a slight fall from the 7 per cent of tests that came back positive the week prior, which as the highest positivity rate recorded so far this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Neither Nimbus nor Stratus are thought to cause new symptoms compared to previous strains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, medics have warned that anyone with\u00a0a <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-14793927\/Covid-symptom-Nimbus.html\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;razor blade&#8217; throat<\/a>\u00a0could have Nimbus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Michael Gregory, regional medical Director for NHS England in the North West recently said: &#8216;The variant looks to be spreading rapidly within communities, with top symptoms being a &#8220;razor blade&#8221; sore throat and swollen neck glands.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But any Covid infection with the virus can still be deadly, especially for more vulnerable groups like the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                    Share or comment on this article:<br \/>\n                        Covid alert!
