Butland, Redmond, Gray, Bellingham (x2), Hall and James have all earned the chant \u2018one of our own\u2019 in recent years at St Andrew\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Naming a club developed player in their EFL squad list or even a matchday squad, as per the rules, has never been a problem \u2013 until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/chris-davies-football-coach\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Chris DaviesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Davies<\/a> only named a club developed player in a Blues squad for a League One match four times last season. Brandon Khela was a substitute versus Reading, Wycombe and Barnsley, and Bradley Mayo featured on the bench at Bolton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">No club developed player \u2013 \u2018a player who has been registered with the relevant club for a minimum of 12 months prior to the end of his Under 19 Season\u2019 \u2013 made the squad Blues registered with the EFL at the end of each transfer window either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">That was despite the rules stating: \u201cEach club shall be required to nominate at least one Club Developed Player on either the Squad List, or on the Team Sheet for all League matches (including Play Off matches).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The punishment for not abiding by that rule is a reduced number of substitutes. Well, there is a way to render the whole thing pointless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you read the small print on the EFL regulations, by transferring two or more club developed players to a club in a league that is the same level or higher prior to the date of the applicable league fixture, an exemption is made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Better still, the club is exempt until those players turn 24. That means Jordan James, who transferred to Rennes last summer, Jobe Bellingham and even <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/jude-bellingham\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Jude BellinghamLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Jude Bellingham<\/a> count towards Blues\u2019 total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/romelle-donovan\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Romelle Donovan,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Romelle Donovan,<\/a> 18, recently completed a transfer to Premier League club Brentford and Blues will be able to use that deal to get around this rule for the next six seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">That\u2019s not to say that Blues don\u2019t want to give homegrown youngsters a chance. Their recently upgraded Category One academy will be leaned on in the coming years but the trajectory of the first team means it\u2019s difficult for players to break through at present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The fact of the matter is that very few EFL academies, if any, have produced better quality footballers than Blues in the past decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And that means they have met the \u2018club developed player\u2019 requirements \u2013 even if we are no longer seeing them in Blues\u2019 own first team.<\/p>\n<p>Do Blues need to prioritise blooding their own youngsters again?
