{"id":236979,"date":"2025-07-04T08:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T08:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/236979\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T08:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T08:50:10","slug":"birmingham-indoor-market-developers-break-silence-as-future-of-massive-700-home-plan-up-in-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/236979\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham Indoor Market developers break silence as future of massive 700-home plan up in the air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Developers behind a bid to bulldoze Birmingham&#8217;s Bull Ring Indoor Market and replace it with more than 700 flats have been left frustrated after it was refused.<\/p>\n<p>Hammerson&#8217;s proposal for the 900-year-old facility was unanimously rejected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Birmingham;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Birmingham<\/a> City Council&#8217;s planning committee amid concerns around the long-term future of the market.<\/p>\n<p>But, after Thursday&#8217;s (July 3) committee meeting, the property development company expressed disappointment at the decision.<\/p>\n<p><b> READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/birmingham-indoor-market-plan-thrown-141239040.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Birmingham Indoor Market plan thrown out as councillors demand assurance over its future;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham Indoor Market plan thrown out as councillors demand assurance over its future<\/a> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The company added it remains committed to the scheme as it would be a &#8216;positive enhancement of the city&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed development for the site in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/edgbaston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Edgbaston;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Edgbaston<\/a> Street would provide up to 745 apartments or up to 1,544 student bedrooms \u2013 or any combination of those uses \u2013 in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the committee had previously deferred the decision on two occasions to enable further discussions to take place to help ensure the future of the market.<\/p>\n<p>Planning officers said those talks had proved fruitful and resulted in an extension of the council&#8217;s lease on the current location from September 2025 to March 2027.<\/p>\n<p>They said this would enable a temporary home on the former wholesale market to be created before a move into a permanent location on the wider Smithfield development.<\/p>\n<p>But members of the committee said they still wanted more assurances over the market&#8217;s future as well as other issues including the harm on the conservation area and concerns the development would create hundreds of one-bedroom flats.<\/p>\n<p>In response, officers said it was only an outline application, it wasn&#8217;t known what the housing type would be and there had been no objections from the conservation officer.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Hammerson said: \u201c(The) decision is deeply frustrating given its continued focus on a non-planning matter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is despite a substantial consultation process and repeatedly strong recommendations by the council\u2019s planning officers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We remain highly committed to the redevelopment which we firmly believe will lead to a positive enhancement of the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We await the committee\u2019s full report and will confirm our next steps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Planning committee chairman Councillor Lee Marsham said the application had given him a &#8216;sleepless night&#8217; before the meeting but agreed with other members that it was not right for the city.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing Hammerson, he said: &#8220;Please continue to work with the city.
