{"id":237511,"date":"2025-07-04T13:34:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T13:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/237511\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T13:34:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T13:34:12","slug":"iaea-inspectors-depart-tehran-after-us-israel-iran-conflict-nuclear-weapons-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/237511\/","title":{"rendered":"IAEA inspectors depart Tehran after US-Israel-Iran conflict | Nuclear Weapons News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The officials from the UN nuclear watchdog had remained in the capital throughout the recent 12 days of fighting.<\/p>\n<p>A team of inspectors from the UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog have left Iran, following Tehran\u2019s decision to suspend cooperation with the organisation after its 12-day conflict with Israel and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on X on Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its employees would return to its headquarters in Vienna, Austria.<\/p>\n<p>IAEA Director-General<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rafaelmgrossi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Rafael Grossi<\/a> stressed \u201cthe crucial importance\u201d of holding talks with Iran to resume its monitoring and verification work as soon as possible, the post added.<\/p>\n<p>The inspectors stayed in the Iranian capital throughout the recent fighting, which started on 13 June when Israel targeted Iranian military sites and killed some of the country\u2019s most senior commanders, top scientists, and a number of civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The US later became involved in the conflict, dropping bunker buster bombs on nuclear facilities in Iran, in a mission the Trump administration claimed had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/3\/us-says-its-strikes-degraded-irans-nuclear-programme-by-one-to-two-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significantly set back the country\u2019s nuclear programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of the US and Israeli aerial attacks, Iran, which has said it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/3\/iran-says-it-is-committed-to-npt-slams-germanys-support-for-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)<\/a>, but made painfully clear its burgeoning distrust of the IAEA.<\/p>\n<p>Since the start of the conflict, Iranian officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/30\/iran-hardens-stance-against-iaea-and-its-chief-in-wake-of-us-israel-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharply criticised the IAEA<\/a> not only for failing to condemn the Israeli and US strikes, but also for passing a resolution on June 12 accusing Tehran of non-compliance with its nuclear obligations, the day before Israel attacked.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered the country to cut ties with the nuclear watchdog.\u00a0A bill to suspend cooperation had already been passed in the Iranian parliament and approved by the country\u2019s Guardian Council.<\/p>\n<p>Guardian Council spokesperson Hadi Tahan Nazif said the decision had been taken for the \u201cfull respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The bill itself says the suspension \u201cwill remain in effect until certain conditions are met, including the guaranteed security of nuclear facilities and scientists\u201d, according to Iranian state television.<\/p>\n<p>The US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce called Iran\u2019s decision to suspend cooperation with the IAEA \u201cunacceptable\u201d, urging Tehran \u201cto reverse course and choose a path of peace and prosperity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran cannot and will not have a nuclear weapon,\u201d she reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran denies wanting to produce a nuclear bomb, reiterating for years that its nuclear programme is for civilian use only.
