{"id":237513,"date":"2025-07-04T13:35:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T13:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/237513\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T13:35:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T13:35:12","slug":"dutch-and-german-intelligence-say-russia-increasingly-uses-chemical-weapons-in-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/237513\/","title":{"rendered":"Dutch and German Intelligence Say Russia Increasingly Uses Chemical Weapons in Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"195\" data-end=\"416\">Dutch and German intelligence agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/english.defensie.nl\/latest\/news\/2025\/07\/04\/russia-further-intensifies-its-use-of-chemical-weapons-in-ukraine\" title=\"said\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Friday that they had gathered evidence of Russia\u2019s growing use of chemical weapons in Ukraine and called for tougher sanctions against Moscow and continued military support for Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"418\" data-end=\"673\">The Dutch military and general intelligence services, MIVD and AIVD, along with Germany\u2019s foreign intelligence service BND, said they had identified the chemical agent chloropicrin, which \u201ccan be fatal when used in high concentrations in enclosed spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"878\">In May, the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2024\/05\/02\/us-accuses-russia-of-using-chemical-weapons-in-ukraine-a85011\" title=\"imposed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imposed<\/a> sanctions on Russia for its alleged use of chloropicrin and tear gas in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Kremlin rejected the accusations as \u201cbaseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"1095\">The Dutch and German agencies said Russia\u2019s military leadership and its radiological, chemical and biological defense forces were \u201csupporting\u201d and \u201cactively facilitating\u201d the use of banned agents on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1296\">\u201cThe use of both teargas and chloropicrin by Russian troops has now become standard practice and commonplace and will highly probably remain a threat in the future,\u201d they said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1498\">Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans called the \u201csystemic and large-scale\u201d use of such chemicals a \u201cslippery slope\u201d that endangers not only Ukraine but Europe and the wider international community.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1500\" data-end=\"1612\">\u201cThis calls for more sanctions, the isolation of Russia and undiminished military support for Ukraine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1761\">Brekelmans informed the Dutch parliament of the findings, which were made public to prevent the \u201cnormalization\u201d of chemical weapons use, MIVD said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"2003\">The intelligence agencies said Ukraine has documented more than 9,000 chemical attacks by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. At least three Ukrainian deaths have been directly linked to chemical exposure, they said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2195\">\u201cIndirectly, Russia\u2019s use of chemical weapons has led to far greater numbers of Ukrainian victims as it has forced many Ukrainian troops to break cover, allowing them to be killed using conventional weapons,\u201d the agencies added.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2197\" data-end=\"2474\">Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of using chemical weapons during the war.
