Xbox executive producer Matt Turnbull has responded to the massive layoffs across Microsoft and Xbox in a now-deleted LinkedIn post suggesting laid off employees use AI tools such as ChatGPT for \u201cemotional clarity\u201d after 9,000 employees lost their jobs.<\/p>\n

The still-ongoing lay-offs have resulted in the closure of entire studios including Perfect Dark developer The Initiative as well as the cancellation of other projects including Everwild<\/a>, the \u201cf*****g incredible\u201d MMORPG from the studio behind Elder Scrolls Online<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n

In the now-deleted post, available here<\/a>, Turnbull\u2014who still has his job at Xbox\u2014offered the \u201cbest advice\u201d they could to the thousands of employees let go from their jobs. That advice was to use AI tools\u2014including Microsoft\u2019s in-house Copilot tool\u2014to \u201chelp reduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss\u201d.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Turnbull explained that the laid off employees could use AI to users with \u201ccareer planning\u201d that would help workers with their \u201cnetworking and outreach\u201d as well as \u201cemotional clarity and confidence\u201d.<\/p>\n

Turnbull\u2019s lengthy spiel even provided multiple AI prompt that they claimed would help employees. The most egregious example reads: \u201cI\u2019m struggling with impostor syndrome after being laid off. Can you help me reframe this experience in a way that reminds me what I\u2019m good at?\u201d<\/p>\n

Turnbull\u2019s LinkedIn post has since been deleted following mass criticism from followers on the social media platform. Zenimax Online producer Eric Smith, an employee who was let go and had his long in-development project cancelled responded, saying, \u201cJesus Christ, read the room dude\u201d.<\/p>\n

Microsoft\u2019s recent round of cost-cutting hasn\u2019t only affected its in-house studios. The Xbox lay-offs have also resulted in funding being pulled from third-party partners, including DOOM creator John Romero\u2019s independent studio Romero Games, which has since had to lay off its entire workforce<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The viscous lay-offs come alongside a memo sent to developers explaining that the Xbox \u201cplatform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger\u201d. Spencer told laid off employees \u201cthe success we\u2019re seeing currently is based on tough decisions we\u2019ve made previously.\u201d<\/p>\n
