Waving his shovel after the job was done, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-14591363\/King-Charles-tree-ambassador-climate-change-Pope-visit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:he poignantly quipped;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">he poignantly quipped<\/a>, \u201cWell, I do hope that I shall live long enough to see a little bit of growth in the tree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s impossible to ignore that Prince William\u2014Charles\u2019s eldest son and his heir\u2014might, at 42, come face-to-face with the throne sooner than he expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When Charles became king in 2022, he was two months away from turning 74\u2014at that age, the oldest person to take the British throne in history. He could go on another 10 years, he could go on for 20 years. But with the cancer diagnosis, it\u2019s a wake-up call.\u201d He adds that \u201cCharles knows that he isn\u2019t going to be king for that long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His condition, however, has not slowed the sovereign (and known workaholic) down. \u201cQueen Camilla still worries that her husband is perhaps pushing himself too hard,\u201d Andersen says. \u201cNobody really expected him to be an ideal patient. King Charles has always been very impatient and is accustomed to getting his way at all times. Anyone who thought he would obey his doctors and take it easy indefinitely doesn\u2019t know the man.\u201d Case in point? Less than two weeks after his hospitalization, he and Camilla were in Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe pace of this reign hasn\u2019t changed since it started,\u201d Hardman says. \u201cLife is carrying on as it would\u2019ve done if he hadn\u2019t had the cancer. With Charles\u2019s parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, living to 96 and 99, respectively, many no doubt assumed that Charles, too, would probably live to be a nonagenarian. But cancer is a game-changing disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After waiting so long to take the throne, Charles \u201cis determined to make his mark as king,\u201d Bedell Smith says. \u201cI would maintain that he made an extraordinary mark as Prince of Wales, and that\u2019s a huge part of his legacy. But he doesn\u2019t want that to be his only legacy.
