Following the success of M3GAN<\/a> in 2022, it seems like the horror film\u2019s sequel was guaranteed to be a big hit.<\/p>\n

But it so M3GAN 2.0<\/a> far holds a rotten 57% rating<\/a> from critics on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> and has failed to score big at the box office.<\/p>\n

Directed by Gerard Johnstone, the sequel follows the events of the first film, picking up two years later as Gemma (Allison Williams)<\/a> has become an advocate for government<\/a> oversight of AI. <\/p>\n

She is forced to resurrect her murderous creation after a defence contractor creates a military-grade weapon known as Amelia<\/a>, whose self-awareness increases to deadly levels, forcing M3GAN to bring her down.<\/p>\n

Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and Jen Van Epps all reprised their roles from the prior film, while Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari and Jemaine Clement joined the cast.<\/p>\n

After being slammed by critics as \u2018a downgrade\u2019<\/a> and \u2018thoroughly middling\u2019<\/a>, producer Jason Blum has shared why he believed the sequel did not connect with fans.<\/p>\n

\u2018We all thought M3GAN was like Superman,\u2019 he told The Town<\/a>\u00a0podcast. \u2018We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy.<\/p>\n

\u2018And we classically overthought how powerful people\u2019s engagement was, really, with her.\u2019<\/p>\n

He also cited the film\u2019s genre shift, from a bloody horror<\/a> to more of an action-comedy, as another factor, as well as the film\u2019s summer release.<\/p>\n

\u2018We thought she could live in the summer, right? We thought, \u201cWe\u2019re going from a little movie to a tentpole!\u201d\u2018<\/p>\n

In their review, The New Yorker<\/a> wrote: \u2018M3GAN 2.0 has little dramatic shape and no directorial style. In striving for more than the original, it achieves far less.\u2019<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone<\/a> added: \u2018Her model is 2.0. The overbaked, underwhelming, narratively restless movie itself is 0.0 percent watchable.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> said: \u2018A convoluted mishmash with shades of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible and the Austin Powers franchise. There are amusing moments reminiscent of the original, but in terms of tone and coherence, the movie loses its way.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, others said that the film is \u2018a blast\u2019<\/a> and \u2018a campy delight.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

MovieFreak.com<\/a> reasoned: \u2018[M3GAN 2.0] is proof that bigger isn\u2019t always better. But that doesn\u2019t mean this goofy, far too convoluted sequel still can\u2019t be a gigantic amount of fun.\u2019<\/p>\n
