Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang is opening up about the \u201cpainful and detrimental\u201d experience of going to conversion therapy.<\/p>\n
In a preview <\/a>for NBC\u2019s Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist, Yang and the Sunday Today host discussed how The Wedding Banquet actor was put into gay conversion therapy by his parents when he was a teenager. \u201cI \u2018came out\u2019 in a sense that my parents just sort of stumbled upon something, and they were like \u2018Oh, we didn\u2019t realize this is what we were dealing with,\u2019\u201d Yang told Willie Geist in the video preview.<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n Yang said his parents didn\u2019t know how to handle the situation. \u201cI give them a lot of grace for that because they just had no context for it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The comedian and actor explained that he was given an ultimatum by his parents that if he went to conversion therapy, he could then go to New York University and live with his older sister. \u201cThose poor people did not realize that that\u2019s one of the gayest schools in the country,\u201d Yang joked, adding that the only way he could leave Denver was if he went to conversion therapy.<\/p>\n \u201cI kind of played along, and I kind of just humored them and myself into seeing what it was,\u201d the Las Culturistas podcast host said. Wang said at the time he didn\u2019t realize how painful the situation would be, but that he\u2019s had a large amount of healing since then.<\/p>\n Yang has opened about his experience multiple times in the past.
