{"id":238679,"date":"2025-07-04T23:47:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T23:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/238679\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T23:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T23:47:15","slug":"work-finally-set-to-start-to-transform-oldham-town-centre-after-a-decade-of-planning-wrangles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/238679\/","title":{"rendered":"Work FINALLY set to start to transform Oldham town centre after a decade of planning wrangles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After several plans have fallen through, an Oldham town centre site could finally be getting a much-needed makeover.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Oldham-Mumps.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A date has been set for the first part of a \u2018transformational\u2019 project to get underway in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a> town centre. Plans by developers Muse to build more than 1,600 apartments across six well-known sites were approved at a planning meeting on Wednesday, July 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The proposals will drastically change Oldham\u2019s Civic Tower; the Civic Centre and its brutalist theatre; the Queen Elizabeth Hall; Manchester Chambers; the former leisure centre; the demolished Magistrates Courts; and the car park at Prince\u2019s Gate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Most will be turned into apartment blocks, with shops and community space on the ground floor, similar to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/northern-quarter\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Quarter<\/a> in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Layout-of-Muse-regeneration-plan-for-Oldham.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Muse\/ Oldham Council plans for the town centre.(Image: Muse)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Developers have now revealed that the first construction works are expected to begin in autumn this year, with the first site chosen as Prince\u2019s Gate. The building will start after some preliminary works and site investigations, which are due to begin \u2018imminently\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When they start, the works will conclude a decade-long saga afflicting the Prince\u2019s Gate site. The townhall-owned land was due to be turned into an M&amp;S warehouse almost ten years ago, before the grocery chain pulled out in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Then Lidl put forward plans to turn the site into a store and build a hotel for a national chain &#8211; but after four years of negotiations, this deal also fell through in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1751672834_302_0_Princes-Gate-CGI-Oldham-Muse-project-at-Oldham-Mumps.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Muse)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The area\u2019s fraught history is cited by many residents as an example that development projects \u2018never follow through\u2019 in Oldham. This is part of the reason it will be one of the first sites to be developed under the new plans, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking of the planning approval granted at the meeting this week, townhall boss councillor Arooj Shah said: \u201cI am thrilled that we can continue moving forward with our plans &#8211; delivering high-quality homes, including the provision of social and affordable homes to meet local needs. We will also support local businesses and create opportunities for everyone, as part of a clean, green and sustainable future.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1751672835_193_0_Princes-Gate-CGI-Oldham-Muse-project-at-Oldham-Mumps.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Muse)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cTogether, we are creating a place that we can all be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And Alex Vogel, Senior Development Manager at Muse added: \u201cOn behalf of the whole project team, we are delighted that Oldham Council\u2019s Planning Committee have granted approval to these six planning applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe final plans were shaped and refined over a number of months, listening to community and stakeholder feedback to help create a place for people to live, work and play.
