It\u2019s been a bit of a rollercoaster week in the games industry, and for PS5 fans it\u2019s been underlined by Sony\u2019s sudden decision<\/a> to publish Helldivers 2<\/a> on Xbox Series X|S.<\/p>\n

This is an unprecedented decision from the manufacturer: while it\u2019s not the first PlayStation game to launch on Microsoft\u2019s machine, it feels markedly different this time.<\/p>\n

With MLB The Show<\/a>, we know the manufacturer was pressured by the league into releasing the title everywhere. While it still makes the games, it doesn\u2019t publish them on Xbox or Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n

And in the case of Death Stranding: Director\u2019s Cut<\/a>, publishing was handled by 505 Games, once Sony\u2019s console exclusivity contract expired.<\/p>\n

But in the case of Helldivers 2, the manufacturer is handling the publishing itself, begging the question: what\u2019s next? Almost certainly a Switch 2 port will follow.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s left fans divided.<\/p>\n

In our very own Push Square<\/strong><\/a> poll, 46% of readers said it\u2019s a \u201cpositive thing\u201d for more people to play the Arrowhead shooter. But 27% argued that Sony is diluting its brand. The remaining 27% said they don\u2019t care either way.<\/p>\n

As you\u2019d expect, it\u2019s on social media where the response has been a bit fiercest.<\/p>\n

One fan on Reddit<\/a> referred to the rumours<\/a> regarding Xbox\u2019s next-gen console incorporating Steam:<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not being salty when I say this is the beginning of the end of Sony is they do this. Xbox\u2019s new console will have access to PS games via Steam and Sony putting their live service games on Xbox, why do I need a PS console? Bye Sony!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Another relatively high profile content creator<\/a> on X<\/a> (or Twitter<\/a>) added:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf PlayStation wants to go down the same sh*thole Xbox went by becoming third-party so be it. I just hope the brand is strong enough to withstand the insane devaluation of the platform. If not, get ready for irrelevance, good luck PS6.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The PS Blog<\/a> is also starting to attract comments about the move, and they\u2019re not particularly positive, as you\u2019d expect. But as is so often the case, it\u2019s always the angriest whose opinions get shoved to the front.<\/p>\n

We remain measured in our response: as we wrote in our Reaction<\/strong><\/a> piece this week, extending the player base of lucrative live service software makes sense, but it remains to be seen just how large the addressable audience on Xbox even is.<\/p>\n

As always, it\u2019d be nice to see news like this accompanied by clear and consistent communication from PlayStation\u2019s management, but the company rarely ever connects with its consumers anymore, so we\u2019ll probably have to wait months for more information.<\/p>\n

In its most recent comments, the firm said<\/a> it was being \u201creally thoughtful\u201d about the experiences it brings to PC \u2013 presumably that same statement applies to Xbox and Switch 2 as well. Time will tell!<\/p>\n
