A co-founder of the pro-Palestinian group Palestine<\/a> Action urged a London<\/a> court on Friday to suspend the British government\u2019s decision to ban the organisation under anti-terrorism laws, which her lawyers called an \u201cauthoritarian abuse\u201d of legal powers.<\/p>\n

Huda Ammori, who helped found Palestine Action in 2020, asked London\u2019s High Court to stop the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, before a full hearing of her case that banning Palestine Action is unlawful later this month.<\/p>\n

British lawmakers this week decided to ban the group in response to its activists breaking into a Royal Air Force base and damaging two planes, a protest against what it says is Britain\u2019s support for Israel.<\/p>\n

Proscription would make it a crime to be a member of Palestine Action, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Proscribed groups under British law include Islamic State and al Qaeda.<\/p>\n

Protests Spark Legal Backlash<\/strong><\/p>\n

Palestine Action has increasingly targeted Israel-linked companies in Britain with direct action. Critics of the government\u2019s decision, including some United Nations experts and civil liberties groups, say damaging property does not amount to terrorism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first time in our history that a direct action, civil disobedience group which does not advocate for violence has been sought to be proscribed as terrorists,\u201d Ammori\u2019s lawyer, Raza Husain, told the court.<\/p>\n

Husain described the government\u2019s decision as \u201can ill-considered, discriminatory, authoritarian abuse of statutory power that is alien to the basic tradition of the common law\u201d.<\/p>\n

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Britain\u2019s interior minister, said this week that \u201cviolence and serious criminal damage has no place in legitimate protests\u201d.<\/p>\n

Husain said that \u201cone may disagree with what Palestine Action do and think that criminal damage, trespass and burglary are wrong\u201d, but that designation of the group as a terrorist organisation was \u201can abuse of language\u201d.<\/p>\n

A decision on whether to pause Palestine Action\u2019s impending proscription is expected later on Friday.<\/p>\n
