Following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/the-public-consultation-has-been-launched-for-oxford-streets-transformation-plans-heres-how-to-have-your-say-022825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public consultation<\/a>, London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced that there was \u2018overwhelming public and business support\u2019 for the initiative, and that his office would be \u2018moving\u00a0ahead as quickly as possible\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, another section of the West End could see\u00a0vehicles banned completely.\u00a0Proposals have been put forward to pedestrianise\u00a0Regent Street St James\u2019s \u2013 the road to the south of Piccadilly Circus that runs between Piccadilly and St James\u2019s Park \u2013 and to make the\u00a0on-foot area of Piccadilly Circus bigger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The scheme by\u00a0Westminster City Council and The Crown Estate could also see improved cycle lanes on Regent Street and the introduction of two-way traffic on Haymarket. It also wants to see the \u2018greening\u2019 of Regent Street, with better pedestrian crossings and the removal of the island running down the centre of the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While traffic-free streets might seem like a modern idea, in fact this proposal reimagines a plan put forward by John Nash 200 years ago, Westminster Council said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Geoff Barraclough, cabinet member for planning and economic development at Westminster City Council, said the plans would create \u2018a new network of public spaces\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018This is a rare opportunity to reimagine the heart of the West End as a greener, more welcoming and accessible place that works better for residents, visitors and local businesses alike.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Naysayers, you can hold your horses (or cars) for now.
