Leading <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire<\/a> councillors have approved the expansion of the school while lambasting the lack of places for children in the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Manorbrook Primary School in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/thornbury\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Thornbury<\/a> will expand from 210 places to 420 places over the next two years, with two classes in each year group. Two breach classes have already been created, and the expansion will cost <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire Council<\/a> \u00a34 million to build.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The expansion was approved by the cabinet on Monday, April 14. Thornbury and other parts of South Gloucestershire have seen an increasing population in recent years, with many new houses built. But often the public services, like schools, haven\u2019t kept up pace with new demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> Councillor Ian Boulton, co-leader of the council and cabinet member for education, said: \u201cIt feels as if we\u2019re really making progress now on catching up with the school places that have been lacking in the areas across South Gloucestershire in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s something that\u2019s very positive. After years of failure to build school places to meet demand, I am delighted this administration has today agreed further funding necessary to provide much needed school buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberal Democrats<\/a> and Labour took control of South Gloucestershire in 2023, after the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/conservative-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservatives<\/a> had led the council for the previous 16 years. Similar issues have been faced by communities in new housing estates like Lyde Green and north <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/yate\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Yate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sign up to receive daily news updates and breaking news alerts straight to your inbox for free <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3r1T6AI\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Liberal Democrat Cllr Simon Johnson, cabinet member for children and young people, added: \u201cIt\u2019s important that as the population grows in South Gloucestershire we continue to develop the infrastructure that builds around that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Seeing more school places to support children and young people is a massive priority, and hopefully one that\u2019s welcomed by people who live locally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">New schools are also <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/local-news\/lyde-green-secondary-primary-schools-10090524\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">under construction<\/a> in Lyde Green, a housing estate north-east of Bristol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They are due to open to the first set of pupils in September next year. The primary school will provide a new home for Lyde Green Primary School with 420 places, and the high school will have 900 places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They were originally due to open in 2022, but have faced severe delays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Liberal Democrat Cllr Maggie Tyrell, leader of the council, said: \u201cThornbury has been in a terrible situation where the houses have been built but no school places were provided. Families have been struggling to get their children into the school of their choice. This problem has been happening across South Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We came into office and started to sort out the problems. We\u2019ve looked at where the school infrastructure hadn\u2019t been put in place alongside the housing.
