Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/scottish-trump-gdp-government-university-of-strathclyde-b2782355.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the total deficit;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the total deficit<\/a> may be as high as $28.8 billion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img in 2025, according to the WTTC study (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a wake-up call for the U.S. government,\u201d Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC, said in a statement in May. \u201cWhile other nations are rolling out the welcome mat, the U.S. government is putting up the \u2018closed\u2019 sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The projected decline is driven by an estimated 20 percent drop in Canadian visitors through 2025, who spent $20.5 billion and made up almost a quarter of foreign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/tourists\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tourists;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tourists<\/a> who came to the U.S. last year.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mexico\u2019s tourism industry is expected to boom with WTTC projections for 2025 indicating a record $281 billion uptick to the country\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>The potential backward slide comes amid alarming reports of foreign tourists having their <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/teenage-german-tourists-handcuffed-deported-122305825.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:travel plans upended;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel plans upended<\/a>, with some even <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/tourists-whose-dream-american-vacations-130834652.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:detained by U.S. authorities;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detained by U.S. authorities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It included Charlotte Pohl, 19, and Maria Lep\u00e8re, 18, from Rostock, Germany, who had their hopes of island-hopping Hawaii dashed and were denied entry into the U.S. inflammatory rhetoric and clampdown on the border (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Total foreign visitors were down 12 percent year-on-year in March, according to the National Travel and Tourism Office, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. \u00a0That drop marked one of the steepest declines on record outside of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Western European visitors experienced a 17 percent drop-off, spearheaded by fewer British and German visitors \u2013 14 and 28 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Americans\u2019 appetite for foreign travel also appears to have been impacted.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. citizens appear more concerned about being detained or harassed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents when they re-enter the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has repeatedly warned that agents have searched the electronic devices of U.S. citizens at the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll travelers crossing the United States border are subject to CBP inspection,\u201d the CBP\u2019s website reads. \u201cOn rare occasions, CBP officers may search a traveler\u2019s mobile phone, computer, camera, or other electronic devices during the inspection process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Los Angeles political consultant Rick Taylor was pulled aside by border agents, separated from his family and placed in a holding room with several Latino travelers for nearly an hour, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-06-27\/are-you-from-california-political-advisor-said-he-was-detained-at-airport-after-confirming-hes-from-la\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"
