The Bayern Munich playmaker exited the game after a foul by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the edge of the box. Referee Anthony Taylor, perhaps shocked by the severity of the injury, didn’t opt to review the incident and instead sent both teams to the dressing room.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good,” Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund said when asked by DAZN about the Musiala injury at halftime. That seemed to be obvious. The ankle looked weirdly bent out of shape as the 22-year-old went to the ground. Not surprisingly, Bayern officials were angered by the incident. “When I jump onto Musiala’s lower leg while sprinting, weighing 100 kg, there’s a high risk of something happening,” Bayern director of sport Max Eberl said when asked about the incident. “I don’t think he did it intentionally, but he also wasn’t being considerate.”

How bad is the injury? “It was emotional,” Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said. “Of course, it didn’t look good. I hope it’s not too bad, but it didn’t look good. I hope he’ll have the best possible recovery. Then Kompany, who usually tries to remain calm at press conferences, raised his voice. “My blood is still boiling right now, not because of the result, that’s football,” Kompany said. “But because it happened to someone who enjoys the game so much.” The Rekordmeister didn’t want to confirm initial reports out of Atlanta that Musiala had broken his fibula.

Jamal Musiala injured – Where do Bayern Munich go from here?

It was certainly another frustrating moment for Bayern head coach Kompany. The 39-year-old saw key injuries to Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito, and Musiala derail his Champions League campaign last season. Now, before the 2025/26 season has even fully kicked off, he will be once again without a key player. “I’m not someone who complains about that,” Kompany said when asked about the injuries. “It’s a fact, and it happened, but our fight is to make sure before the season that it doesn’t happen. We need to stay calm and objective. To be honest, you also need luck. We couldn’t do anything about Musiala’s injury today. You can always have everything under control. It’s a pity.”

One thing that Bayern now have under control is how they will react on the transfer market. Bayern have struggled to sign a new left-back. Bayern lost out on Florian Wirtz earlier this summer. Then, Nico Williams signed a new contract at Athletic Bilbao this week. Jamie Gittens opted to join Chelsea instead. Other targets like Rafael Leão never seemed realistic in the first place. One player who wants to join is VfB Stuttgart star Nick Woltemade. Bayern have already agreed on personal terms with the 23-year-old German national team player. Woltemade was the star at the U21 European Championships, scoring five goals and three assists in five games, leading Germany to the final, where they lost to England (3-2 a.e.t.). But Bayern are yet to start negotiations with Stuttgart over a potential deal. Those negotiations could be complex as Stuttgart weren’t pleased about the fact that Bayern reached an agreement with the player behind their backs.

Player Comparison

                Bayern Munich

                VfB Stuttgart

€140.00m

Market Value

€30.00m

Attacking Midfield

Position

Second Striker

Jun 30, 2030

Contract until

Jun 30, 2028

            Full Player Comparison

Stuttgart will also know that signing Woltemade has now become a priority for Bayern Munich. Capable of playing as a no.9 and as a playmaker, Woltemade could be an ideal replacement for Musiala in the short term. Expectations are now that Bayern will go all in for the Stuttgart forward. But Woltemade alone won’t be enough. Bayern will still need to add a left winger and, depending on the severity of the Musiala injury, another central attacking player. Indeed, Bayern have earned over €50m from the tournament. Those finances won’t be available right away, but they could help Bayern long-term in closing the massive hole that the Musiala injury has left in the squad.

Injured by Donnarumma ©IMAGO It was a horrendous moment. Bayern Munich not only exited the FIFA Club World Cup after…

[10
1062,3019,16665,30591,63570,8903,67409,1063,6544,8637,79,16,15,45118
0":"post-241466","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-sports","8":"tag-bayern-munich","9":"tag-bundesliga","10":"tag-fifa-club-world-cup","11":"tag-gianluigi-donnarumma","12":"tag-jamal-musiala","13":"tag-jamie-gittens","14":"tag-nick-woltemade","15":"tag-nico-williams","16":"tag-paris-saint-germain","17":"tag-rafael-leao","18":"tag-sports","19":"tag-uk","20":"tag-united-kingdom","21":"tag-vfb-stuttgart
["GET
