{"id":24154,"date":"2025-04-16T07:23:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T07:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/24154\/"},"modified":"2025-04-16T07:23:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T07:23:09","slug":"stormont-executives-brussels-office-cost-more-than-6-million-since-brexit-vote-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/24154\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormont executive\u2019s Brussels office cost more than \u00a36 million since Brexit vote \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Northern Ireland Executive\u2019s office (TEO) in Brussels has cost the taxpayer more than \u00a36 million since the UK voted to leave the European Union in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the Executive Office, its Brussels office represents the interests of the Northern Ireland Executive in Europe, working to \u201censure that its interests are understood by a range of key European and other stakeholders in the global hub that is modern Brussels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The cost of the office in Belgium has been revealed by TEO following an Assembly Written Question (AWQ) from TUV MLA Timothy Gaston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The office\u2019s budget has remained largely consistent in the last decade at more than \u00a3800,000 per financial year.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/has-one-of-northern-irelands-top-hotels-lost-its-5-star-rating-WDS4HN3NLBGNJCE4EPM47DS4PQ\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Has one of Northern Ireland&#x2019;s top hotels lost its 5-Star rating?\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/NYHIA2BUBRLMRLF23AFLXK2HPA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/this-is-the-dangerous-rapist-that-police-didnt-want-you-to-see-NBIBS23HSVGOTFQ4NAT4RKOVTY\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"This is the dangerous rapist that police didn&#x2019;t want you to see\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/K4H5B76CGRGNXHS6WPTD6632ZI.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Although the total budget dipped to \u00a3760,480 in the most recent financial year of 2023\/24, it still brought the total spend on the office since the Brexit vote in 2016 to \u00a36,740,324.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The figures provided by The Executive Office show that more than \u00a315 million has been provided to run the office since 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The largest annual spend on the Brussels office recorded since the Brexit vote was in 2021\/2022, when it cost a total of \u00a3923,248.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">There are currently 11 members of staff based at the Northern Ireland Executive Office in Brussels, together with two members of staff from Invest NI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Some are employed by the Executive Office, some are locally employed and others are from a range of departments in the Executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Its key priorities are listed as; to assist the Executive to further the aims of its Programme for Government through supporting Northern Ireland\u2019s European engagement; to assist Northern Ireland Departments to contribute to EU policy development and implementation in relation to their core business areas and to increase Departmental engagement with elective European funding programmes; to raise the positive profile of Northern Ireland in Europe and among its institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, TMr Gaston has raised concerns over the spend on the European office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe spend on the Northern Ireland Executive Office in Brussels &#8211; over \u00a36.7 million since the UK voted to leave the EU &#8211; will doubtless cause many to raise eyebrows, not least because I am sure I am not alone in not being clear as to what it actually does,\u201d Mr Gaston told The Irish News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSuch a large investment of public money is something we would expect to see more openness about. It would appear to me that in relation to this &#8211; as with so much in the Executive Office &#8211; there is little regard for public money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI also cannot help but contrast this lavish spend on the Executive\u2019s Brussels office with the fact that InterTrade UK &#8211; which was heralded by the DUP as a major achievement to address the challenges posed by the Protocol &#8211; doesn\u2019t have offices, has no independent budget and no staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis spend is something I intend to probe further in the Executive Office Committee\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Executive Office has been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n    Full coverage, half price.
