The warning comes as part of a crackdown on travel regulations post-Brexit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Spain&#8217;s Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/health\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Health <\/a>introducing the new rule &#8211; and it has caught many tourists off guard. The rule requires British tourists to prove they have adequate health insurance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which some visitors previously relied upon, will not be sufficient cover, and Brits must now have private travel insurance that covers all medical expenses, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/2077436\/brits-issued-urgent-spain-travel\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Express<\/a>. According to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandtourworld.com\/news\/article\/spain-issues-holiday-warning-for-brits-6900-euro-fine-for-missing-health-insurance-proof\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel and Tour World<\/a>, UK tourists must present proof of health insurance before entering Spain, which should cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation, repatriation, and not have excessive deductibles or exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Spain&#8217;s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, stated: &#8220;The health of our visitors is a priority. We are committed to ensuring that all travelers, including British nationals, have the necessary coverage to protect themselves and the local healthcare system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_UK-European-Health-Insurance-Card.jpg\" alt=\"Close up of a UK European Health Insurance Card being held in a hand\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Tourists should not rely on their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as it won&#8217;t cover all costs(Image: Deb Drury via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Spanish authorities can deny entry at the border if tourists cannot provide proof of sufficient health insurance, and travellers already in Spain without proof may face fines of up to \u00a35,900. The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/uk-government\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">UK government<\/a> has issued guidance on travel insurance for those visiting Spain, including a list of recommended insurance providers on its travel advice website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It is also advised that Brits carry proof of insurance with them during their trip. A key warning is that tourists should not delay purchasing travel insurance until they are in Spain, as they will likely need to present proof of insurance before their flight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office cautions: &#8220;If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance.
