Registrations rose by <strong data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"501\">6.7%<\/strong> year-on-year to <strong data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"535\">191,316 units<\/strong>, marking the <strong data-start=\"549\" data-end=\"587\">second consecutive month of growth<\/strong> across the country.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"859\">The positive June results helped lift performance across the first half of 2025 to <strong data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"732\">3.5% above the same period last year<\/strong>. However, the market still lags <strong data-start=\"765\" data-end=\"801\">17.9% behind pre-pandemic levels<\/strong>, showing there\u2019s still some way to go in a full recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"890\">Wales Registers a Dip<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"1184\">Despite strong nationwide growth, the picture in <strong data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"971\">Wales was less encouraging<\/strong>, with <strong data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1015\">5,818 new cars registered in June<\/strong>, representing a <strong data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1050\">4.17% decrease<\/strong> on the same month last year. This figure also sits <strong data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1135\">14.4% behind June 2019 levels<\/strong>, underlining the region\u2019s slower return to form.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1218\">Fleet Sales Lead the Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1570\">Much of the UK-wide growth was driven by <strong data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1277\">fleet demand<\/strong>, which increased by <strong data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1306\">8.5%<\/strong> to 114,841 units. In contrast, <strong data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1363\">private retail demand<\/strong> rose more modestly at <strong data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1394\">5.9%<\/strong>, totalling 71,616 units \u2013 just under <strong data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"1446\">four in 10<\/strong> new car sales. <strong data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"1488\">Business registrations<\/strong>, however, declined <strong data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1518\">-15.8%<\/strong>, reflecting wider economic caution and uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1624\">Electric Vehicle Sales Surge \u2013 But at a Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1626\" data-end=\"1942\">Electric vehicles (EVs) continued their upward trajectory, with <strong data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1724\">battery electric vehicle (BEV)<\/strong> registrations jumping by <strong data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"1759\">39.1%<\/strong> to 47,354 units \u2013 making up <strong data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1811\">24.8% of the market<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"1813\" data-end=\"1840\">Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)<\/strong> also performed well, up <strong data-start=\"1865\" data-end=\"1874\">28.8%<\/strong>, while <strong data-start=\"1882\" data-end=\"1917\">hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)<\/strong> saw an <strong data-start=\"1925\" data-end=\"1941\">8.5% decline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"2147\">Combined, <strong data-start=\"1954\" data-end=\"2000\">electrified vehicles now account for 48.5%<\/strong> of all new registrations. Petrol and diesel models, though still making up just over half the market at <strong data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2114\">51.6%<\/strong>, are in clear long-term decline.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2518\">Despite the promising EV growth, <strong data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2217\">SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes<\/strong> warns that the figures are being <strong data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2305\">propped up by substantial manufacturer discounting<\/strong>, totalling <strong data-start=\"2317\" data-end=\"2357\">\u00a36.5 billion over the past 18 months<\/strong>. He stressed that without <strong data-start=\"2384\" data-end=\"2417\">greater government incentives<\/strong>, the UK may fall short of its <strong data-start=\"2448\" data-end=\"2467\">28% BEV mandate<\/strong> for 2025, with current share sitting at <strong data-start=\"2508\" data-end=\"2517\">21.6%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2560\">Industry Leaders Call for Action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2759\">A recent SMMT survey of industry leaders revealed that <strong data-start=\"2617\" data-end=\"2643\">55% of automotive CEOs<\/strong> believe the UK is significantly <strong data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2693\">behind target<\/strong> to meet its <strong data-start=\"2706\" data-end=\"2758\">2030 ban on new petrol and diesel-only car sales<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2761\" data-end=\"2788\">Proposed solutions include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2789\" data-end=\"2981\">\n<li data-start=\"2789\" data-end=\"2869\">\n<p data-start=\"2791\" data-end=\"2869\">Removing <strong data-start=\"2800\" data-end=\"2869\">Battery Electric Vehicles from the Expensive Car Supplement (ECS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2870\" data-end=\"2915\">\n<p data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"2915\">Reducing <strong data-start=\"2881\" data-end=\"2915\">VAT on EVs and public charging<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"2981\">\n<p data-start=\"2918\" data-end=\"2981\">Introducing stronger <strong data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"2962\">purchase incentives<\/strong> for private buyers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3139\">Without such measures, leaders argue, the transition to zero-emission motoring \u2013 and the
