{"id":242923,"date":"2025-07-06T14:49:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T14:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/242923\/"},"modified":"2025-07-06T14:49:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T14:49:13","slug":"gp-urges-public-to-make-one-urgent-change-right-now-to-ward-off-dementia-in-your-60s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/242923\/","title":{"rendered":"GP urges public to make one urgent change right now to ward off dementia in your 60s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A simple hearing test could significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia in later life, a leading GP has claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While research suggests up to four in ten cases of the memory-robbing condition may be preventable through lifestyle changes, hearing loss remains one of the most overlooked risk factors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a video shared with his 360,000 Instagram followers, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nhs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-8a9a17a0-58d8-11f0-9913-81c0566b6a89\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> GP Dr <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/amir-khan\/index.html\" id=\"mol-8aa3dba0-58d8-11f0-9913-81c0566b6a89\" rel=\"noopener\">Amir Khan<\/a> said: &#8216;Hearing loss isn&#8217;t just an ageing thing\u2014it&#8217;s a brain health thing too.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dementia affects around 982,000 people in the UK. Studies show that those with untreated hearing problems may be up to five times more likely to develop the condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/itv\/index.html\" id=\"mol-64cad0d0-58df-11f0-9913-81c0566b6a89\" rel=\"noopener\">ITV<\/a> Lorraine and <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/good-morning-britain\/index.html\" id=\"mol-64ca3490-58df-11f0-9913-81c0566b6a89\" rel=\"noopener\">Good Morning Britain<\/a> regular Dr Khan said one possible explanation is the concept of &#8216;cognitive load&#8217;\u2014where the brain has to work harder to process sound, drawing resources away from other vital functions such as memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;When you can&#8217;t hear well, your brain works overtime to decode sounds and speech,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That extra effort pulls energy away from memory and thinking.
