Award-winning Ghanaian investigative journalist, <\/a>Manasseh Azure Awuni<\/a>, has recounted a market experience he had in a market at Bolga, where the prices of goods seemed to reflect the current drop in inflation in the country.<\/p>\n

According to him, the prices of rice, oil and maize have reduced significantly in the market.<\/p>\n

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) announced a significant decline in the country’s inflation rate for June 2025, which dropped to 13.7%, down from 18.4% in May 2025.<\/p>\n

This marks a 4.7 percentage point decrease within just one month and represents the lowest inflation rate recorded since December 2021.<\/p>\n

Reacting to the announcement of the current inflation rate on July 3, 2025, Manasseh wrote on July 3, 2025, “On Monday, I went to the Bolga Market. While I waited for some food items I had ordered from a nearby shop to arrive, the owner of the retail shop I was buying from and the man I had gone shopping with struck up a conversation about the prices of food items.<\/p>\n

“A 50-kilogram bag of a rice brand from Burkina Faso, which used to sell for GH\u00a2700, now goes for GH\u00a2480. A certain cooking oil brand is sold for GH\u00a2120. It used to be GH\u00a2200, they said. A bag of maize is now sold at GH\u00a2500, down from GH\u00a2900.”<\/p>\n

Additionally, he noted that the decline in food prices is as important to voters and many Ghanaians as other policies the government intends to implement.<\/p>\n

“I said in my head, happy to have witnessed the tumbling of prices correspond with the falling inflation figures,” he added.<\/p>\n

Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, attributed the recent inflation decline to a significant reduction in inflationary pressures that had weighed heavily on the economy in recent months.<\/p>\n

“For the first time in a while, we are recording a month-on-month deflation of 1.2 percent between May and June, suggesting a real and sustained shift in price levels,” Dr Iddrisu noted during a press briefing in Accra on July 2, 2025.<\/p>\n

The latest figures by the GSS also showed a broad-based easing of prices.<\/p>\n

For instance, food inflation fell sharply by 6.5 percentage points to 16.3 percent, down from 22.8 percent in May. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, non-food inflation also declined to 11.4 percent from 14.4 percent.<\/p>\n

However, regional disparities remain stark, with some parts of the country still experiencing higher-than-average inflation rates.<\/p>\n
