{"id":243672,"date":"2025-07-06T21:51:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T21:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/243672\/"},"modified":"2025-07-06T21:51:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T21:51:09","slug":"bob-arum-admits-floyd-mayweather-should-not-be-undefeated-no-question-he-lost-that-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/243672\/","title":{"rendered":"Bob Arum Admits Floyd Mayweather Should Not Be Undefeated: &#8220;No Question He Lost That Fight&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not everyone agrees that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondsout.com\/topic\/floyd-mayweather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Floyd Mayweather<\/a> earned the right to retire undefeated.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the five-weight world champion ended his storied career with a spotless 50\u20130 record, having secured world titles from super-featherweight to super-welterweight and defeated elite fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, and Canelo Alvarez.<\/p>\n<p>But Bob Arum, the veteran Top Rank promoter who helped guide Mayweather through much of his early career, believes one controversial decision should have left a blemish on that resume.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/29195529\/the-stories-five-fights-their-outcomes-bob-arum-never-forget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN<\/a> in which he looked back on contentious cards, Arum said the April 2002 fight against Jose Luis Castillo was \u2018a travesty of scoring.\u2019 He pointed out that HBO\u2019s Harold Lederman had it 116\u2013111 for Castillo and referenced punch stats that, in his view, clearly backed the Mexican fighter.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAfter watching that fight, I got in the ring and went to Mayweather\u2019s corner. I commiserated with them. I told them that one loss wouldn\u2019t destroy their career. They thought they\u2019d lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The promoter then criticised the ringside judges for the scores of 116-111, 115-111 and 115-111.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe judges not only found for Mayweather unanimously, they scored it as if it wasn\u2019t even close. What kind of absurd scoring is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, Arum recalled the crowd\u2019s reaction that night.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeople started booing. Mayweather, upset with his performance, immediately agreed to a rematch. He\u2019s a smart boxing guy and knew he\u2019d messed up. Castillo won that fight, eight rounds to four \u2014 no question\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondsout.com\/news\/juan-manuel-marquez-on-mayweather-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He isn\u2019t alone in that opinion \u2014 countless big names in the sport have also gone on record to say \u2018Money\u2019 Mayweather deserved to lose that night.<\/a> He made a better impression in the rematch, eight months later, however, winning on the cards without controversy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Not everyone agrees that Floyd Mayweather earned the right to retire undefeated.
