{"id":243974,"date":"2025-07-07T00:37:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T00:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/243974\/"},"modified":"2025-07-07T00:37:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T00:37:24","slug":"european-parliament-to-explore-accelerated-russian-gas-ban-for-2026-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/243974\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament to explore accelerated Russian gas ban\u00a0for\u00a02026 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-hungary-slovakia-fuel-sanctions-russia-energy-donald-trump-viktor-orban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing fears the bill could trigger an avalanche of lawsuits<\/a> from Russian energy firms, Niinist\u00f6 also said he would \u201clook at\u201d its legal basis \u201cto make sure that there are no undue legal consequences for European companies.\u201d The Commission declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Before the proposal becomes law, the MEP will have to forge a compromise among the Parliament\u2019s various political groups \u2014 a feat he hopes to accomplish by \u201cearly fall\u201d and by talking \u201cwith everyone,\u201d including Russia-friendly far-right and far-left lawmakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, he will have to hash out a deal with EU countries, where the bill faces stiff opposition from Hungary and Slovakia, who remain deeply reliant on Russian oil and gas. The bill doesn\u2019t need their backing to pass, but sidelining them risks torpedoing other related laws in process where they hold vetoes.<\/p>\n<p>While both countries have demanded money in exchange for switching suppliers, the proposal currently offers no financial incentives for shifting away from Moscow.
