Jordan Thompson may have been praised by rival Taylor Fritz for being ‘valiant’ – but he felt the complete opposite.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead, the Australian went as far as calling himself ‘a bit of a p****’.<\/p>\n

Back-to-back five-set thrillers in the opening two rounds coupled with a taxing four-set encounter against Luciano Darderi in the third round left Thompson a physically battered man before he stepped onto court against Fritz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three gruelling contests unfortunately caught up to a limping Thompson as he retired from the fourth round contest after just 41 minutes when he was 6-1, 3-0 down to Fritz.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the contest, Fritz hailed Thompson’s bravery and wished him a speedy recovery.<\/p>\n

He said: “Jordan’s been battling out here, playing five-setters, I respect him for coming out, he was valiant.<\/p>\n

“I feel bad for him and I hope he gets better.”<\/p>\n

However, Thompson did not see things the same way.<\/p>\n

“Today just doesn’t feel too valiant at all,” Thompson remarked during his post-match press conference.<\/p>\n

“But I guess looking back on it, it’s a pretty good effort, and it’s behind me now, so I’m not really too worried about how I feel.<\/p>\n

“Honestly, I feel like a bit of a p**** pulling out. I wouldn’t call it valiant.”<\/p>\n

Thompson’s run to the fourth round in SW19 <\/a>– his best-ever finish at the tournament – is all the more remarkable considering he was on the verge of not competing at Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

The Aussie was forced to retire from his opening match at Queen’s, a key warm-up tournament for Wimbledon, due to a back injury.<\/p>\n

Knowing how close he was to pulling the pin on this year’s festivities at the All England Club, only to defy the odds and reach the last-16, was a fair reason for Thompson to label his feat as ‘phenomenal’.<\/p>\n

“I was pretty sore and I was sore every day and I was kind of waiting for it to happen, and it happened,” Thompson stated.<\/p>\n

“So I’m glad it happened today and not in the first round because, honestly, I was thinking of not playing this tournament.<\/p>\n

“So I’m just taking the positives, and it’s my best result here. So it’s still a great tournament.<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t going to play at the tournament. We were still umm-ing and ahh-ing. I played Queen’s and (that) didn’t go well. My back was in ruins. I didn’t practice.<\/p>\n

“So from not going to play the tournament to ending up in the second week… is phenomenal.”<\/p>\n

Thompson’s retirement has also all but confirmed he would not be able to join doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert for their round of 16 clash on Monday against No. 2 seed pairing Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.<\/p>\n

When asked if he’d have to withdraw from the doubles clash, Thompson replied: “It’s looking that way.<\/p>\n

“I told my partner, if by some miracle I wake up tomorrow morning and feel like I have been in the previous matches, that I’ll play.<\/p>\n
