{"id":244608,"date":"2025-07-07T06:39:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T06:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/244608\/"},"modified":"2025-07-07T06:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T06:39:15","slug":"planned-eu-climate-law-change-aims-to-cut-emissions-by-90-percent-by-2040","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/244608\/","title":{"rendered":"Planned EU climate law change aims to cut emissions by 90 percent by 2040"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>a limited role for high-quality international credits beginning in 2036\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>domestic permanent removals in the European Union\u2019s emissions trading system\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>enhanced flexibilities across sectors to assist in affordably and fairly achieving targets, including by permitting a member state to compensate for the struggling land use sector by overachieving on waste and transport emission reduction\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the commission, the proposed 2040 climate target seeks to:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>give investors and businesses the predictability, stability, and certainty they need in the EU\u2019s clean energy transition\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>promote investment in innovation\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>generate more jobs\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>fortify the industrial leadership of the EU\u2019s businesses\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>improve the EU\u2019s energy security and resilience to climate change impacts\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>set a foundation for the EU\u2019s post-2030 climate and energy legislation\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>aim for a competitive European industry\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>level the playing field with international partners\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>achieve a fair and just transition that leaves nobody behind\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>The commission added that the planned change aims to help the EU become more energy-independent, lay out a flexible path toward achieving its target of cutting net GHG emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, and reaffirm its commitment toward decarbonization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we show that we stand firmly by our commitment to decarbonise European economy by 2050,\u201d said Ursula von der Leyen, commission president, in the press release. \u201cThe goal is clear, the journey is pragmatic and realistic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In its news release, the commission shared that the EU is well on its way to achieving its 2030 climate target.
