{"id":246976,"date":"2025-07-08T03:38:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T03:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/246976\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T03:38:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T03:38:14","slug":"trump-says-the-us-must-send-more-weapons-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/246976\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says the US must send more weapons to Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump said Monday the U.S. will have to send more weapons to Ukraine, just days after ordering a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-russia-war-hegseth-trump-pentagon-weapons-1df59a85dbfaa5085b56d84820737376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pause in critical weapons deliveries<\/a> to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>The comments by Trump appeared to be an <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/putin-trump-call-ukraine-iran-9b0054c655cbb3b54126bb3f2c32713c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abrupt change in posture<\/a> after the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-us-weapons-shipments-halt-review-48229eb7c814419631a16067a38d6a1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pentagon announced last week<\/a> that it would hold back delivering to Ukraine some air defense missiles, precision-guided artillery and other weapons because of what U.S. officials said were <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-america-stockpiles-army-trump-pentagon-weapons-94ff0c465b58608c653b6f64c113a5b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concerns that stockpiles have declined<\/a> too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to,\u201d Trump said. \u201dThey have to be able to defend themselves. They\u2019re getting hit very hard now. We\u2019re going to send some more weapons \u2014 defensive weapons primarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pause had come at a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-us-weapons-alternatives-ca5e90a0c1f2cc938dafa9c9e9d061c9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">difficult moment for Ukraine<\/a>, which has faced increasing \u2014 and more complex \u2014 air barrages from Russia during the more than three-year-long war. Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least 11 civilians and injured more than 80 others, including seven children, officials said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The US turnaround on weapons for Ukraine<\/p>\n<p>The move last week to abruptly pause shipments of Patriot missiles, precision-guided GMLRS, Hellfire missiles and Howitzer rounds and weaponry <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/zelenskyy-ukraine-denmark-eu-20ab5cfa9ba97460972cfb9998c16546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took Ukrainian officials and other allies by surprise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon affirmed late Monday that at Trump\u2019s direction, it would resume weapons shipments to Ukraine \u201cto ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops.\u201d Still, spokesman Sean Parnell added that its framework for Trump to evaluate military shipments worldwide continues as part of \u201cAmerica First\u201d defense priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, speaking at the start of a dinner he was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-israel-netanyahu-gaza-ceasefire-30dba4ae46fbec44dbe977a547e612f4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hosting for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> at the White House on Monday, vented his growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump has struggled to find a resolution to the war in Ukraine but maintains he\u2019s determined to quickly conclude a conflict that he had promised as candidate to end of Day One of his second term.<\/p>\n<p>He has threatened, but held off on, imposing new sanctions against Russia\u2019s oil industry to try to prod Putin into peace talks. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said last week that Trump has given him the go-ahead to push forward with a bill he\u2019s co-sponsoring that calls, in part, for a 500% tariff on goods imported from countries that continue to buy Russian oil. (Dmitry Astakhov, Sputnik, Government Pool Photo via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Russia\u2019s transport minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-starovoyt-minister-suicide-kursk-59babee35c7c1bae79c5becd51f52066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was found dead<\/a> in what authorities said was an apparent suicide \u2014 news that broke hours after the Kremlin announced he had been dismissed by Putin. <\/p>\n<p>The firing of Roman Starovoit followed a weekend of travel chaos \u2014 airports grounded hundreds of flights due to the threat of drone attacks from Ukraine. Russian officials did not give a reason for his dismissal.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed at airports in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but Russian commentators said the air traffic disruptions have become customary amid frequent Ukrainian drone raids and were unlikely to have triggered his dismissal.<\/p>\n<p>Starovoit, 53, served as Russia\u2019s transport minister since May 2024. Russian media have reported that his dismissal could have been linked to an investigation into the embezzlement of state funds allocated for building fortifications <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-kursk-35b77352356ae61a0ebcd1643480e338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the Kursk region<\/a>, where he served as governor before being appointed transportation minister.<\/p>\n<p>The alleged embezzlement has been cited as one of the reasons for deficiencies in Russia\u2019s defensive lines that failed to stem a surprise Ukrainian incursion in the region launched in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Russia fired more than 100 drones at civilian areas of Ukraine overnight, authorities said. <\/p>\n<p>Russia recently has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-russia-war-attack-missile-drone-58bc08ddcf1038fb409999c56b11e9fa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intensified its airstrikes on civilian areas<\/a>. In the past week, Russia launched some 1,270 drones, 39 missiles and almost 1,000 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-bombs-airfields-scorched-earth-58380b8625df7ed52a3b5472326559b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">powerful glide bombs<\/a> at Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s bigger army also is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-offensives-ceasefire-c03921de21027d13117cb668c9a1a959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trying hard to break through<\/a> at some points along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620 miles) front line, where Ukrainian forces are severely stretched.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine calls for more military aid<\/p>\n<p>The strain of keeping Russia\u2019s invasion at bay, the lack of progress in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-peace-talks-drone-attacks-0c2e0a4aeccd86c3fe18edf5cc73b250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">direct peace talks<\/a> and last week\u2019s halt of some promised U.S. weapons shipments have compelled Ukraine to seek more military help from the U.S. and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Monday that the pause in weapons to Ukraine came as part of a \u201cstandard review of all weapons and all aid\u201d that the U.S. \u201cis providing all countries and all regions around the world. (AP Photo\/Kateryna Klochko)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy says Ukraine has signed deals with European allies and a leading U.S. defense company to step up drone production, ensuring Kyiv receives \u201chundreds of thousands\u201d more this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAir defense is the main thing for protecting life,\u201d Zelenskyy wrote Monday on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>That includes developing and manufacturing interceptor drones that can stop Russia\u2019s long-range <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-iran-drones-shahed-ukraine-israel-strikes-3ddeb853845f0ea5f81878165af07bfd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shahed drones<\/a>, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Extensive use of drones also has helped Ukraine compensate for its troop shortages on the front line.<\/p>\n<p>One person was killed in the southern city of Odesa, another person was killed and 71 were injured in northeastern Kharkiv, and falling drone debris caused damage in two districts of Kyiv, the capital, during nighttime drone attacks, Ukrainian authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>Russian short-range drones also killed two people and injured two others in the northern Sumy region, officials said.
