{"id":247002,"date":"2025-07-08T03:52:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T03:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/247002\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T03:52:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T03:52:15","slug":"belfast-pubs-cafes-and-restaurants-have-worst-hygiene-ratings-in-northern-ireland-while-derry-is-among-the-best-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/247002\/","title":{"rendered":"Belfast pubs, cafes and restaurants have worst hygiene ratings in Northern Ireland while Derry is among the best \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Eateries in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/belfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/belfast\">Belfast<\/a> have among the lowest food hygiene scores in all of Northern Ireland, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/derry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/derry\">Derry<\/a> pubs, cafes and restaurants score best, according to the latest data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Data from the Food Standards Agency show a stark contrast between the two cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Of the 1072 venues which fall under the categories of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/pub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/pub\">Pub\/Bar Nightclub<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/restaurants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tag\/restaurants\">Restaurant\/Cafe\/Canteen<\/a>\u2019 in Belfast &#8211; 2% of the total (22) were ranked at two stars or less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The number of venues that ranked at two stars or less in Belfast was the highest percentage of any council area in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/tesco-order-loyalist-bonfire-investigation-at-scottish-pallet-depot-D5BNGOITWJDAVCMLDA3EKGDZV4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Tesco orders loyalist bonfire investigation at Scottish pallet depot \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1751946734_51_B3QZUCY4QBAFTOYTRVE4UMGD44.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/video-a-look-at-halt-belfasts-new-city-centre-street-food-market-ZN2FF6H2SJE7BDKS4F7X62CQ6Y\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Video: A look at Halt - Belfast&#x2019;s new city centre street food market \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/VSJAQ4EVIVEDJHYMG53JYCXLFQ.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Derry City and Strabane council area achieved the best possible score &#8211; with no venues scoring less than three stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Under the Food Standards Agency ratings, a two star rating means that \u2018some improvement is necessary\u2019, while a one star decrees that a \u2018major improvement\u2019 is needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A zero star rating mandates \u2018urgent improvement\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Derry and Belfast are on an equal footing when it comes to the percentage of venues that scored 5 stars &#8211; the highest rating possible in the chart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Both cities had around 68% of their bars and restaurants reaching the 5 star mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Derry City and Strabane was one of only two council areas &#8211; the other being Fermanagh and Omagh &#8211; where no premises in our chosen categories received two stars or less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Across Northern Ireland, food hygiene standards remain generally high, with most councils reporting strong performances. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mid Ulster ranks particularly well, with 85% of its 368 inspected venues achieving 5 stars, and only two establishments rated two stars or less. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Newry, Mourne and Down boasts an impressive 84% 5-star ratings, with just under 1% receiving low ratings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Causeway Coast and Glens council area also demonstrates good hygiene standards, with over 80% of its 406 food businesses rated 5 stars, though four venues require improvements having received two stars or less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Other councils such as Lisburn and Castlereagh City and Mid and East Antrim maintain consistent hygiene levels, with around 81-83% of venues receiving 5 stars and very few rated poorly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In Antrim and Newtownabbey, just under 76% of establishments hold the highest hygiene rating, with a tiny proportion falling below three stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ards and North Down and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon also reflect a majority of high ratings, with about 78% of venues scoring 5 stars and only minimal low ratings recorded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Eateries in Belfast have among the lowest food hygiene scores in all of Northern Ireland, while Derry pubs,&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":247003,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5011],"tags":[2378,16767,786,1144,15819,280,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-247002","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-northern-ireland","8":"tag-belfast","9":"tag-derry","10":"tag-food-and-drink","11":"tag-northern-ireland","12":"tag-pub","13":"tag-restaurants","14":"tag-uk","15":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114815589111402706","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/247002","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=247002"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/247002\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/247003"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=247002"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=247002"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=247002"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
