{"id":247672,"date":"2025-07-08T09:47:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T09:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/247672\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T09:47:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T09:47:18","slug":"migration-ukraine-and-brexit-loom-over-macrons-uk-visit-%e2%94%81-the-european-conservative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/247672\/","title":{"rendered":"Migration, Ukraine, and Brexit Loom Over Macron\u2019s UK Visit \u2501 The European Conservative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scheduled for Tuesday, July 8th, French president Emmanuel Macron\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/politics\/emmanuel-macron-keir-starmer-french-government-prime-minister-b1236882.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state visit<\/a> to Britain will see illegal migration and the Ukraine war high on the agenda\u2014with further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2025\/07\/08\/macron-victor-arrives-surrender-summit-starmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dilution of Brexit<\/a> an almost inevitable sidebar.<\/p>\n<p>In advance of the official pageantry, including a role for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cyvjg41e6mzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles<\/a>, both countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/07\/france-uk-plan-small-boat-crossings-keir-starmer-emmanuel-macron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appear<\/a> to be managing expectations about a possible deal on \u2018small boat\u2019 migrants. France has previously signalled a <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanconservative.com\/articles\/news-corner\/france-to-start-intercepting-channel-taxi-boats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">willingness to take a tougher line on \u2018taxi boats<\/a>\u2019 and cross-border exchanges of asylum seekers whose circumstances mean that they would match the terms of a \u2018one in, one out\u2019 deal. Starmer attempted but failed to <a href=\"https:\/\/order-order.com\/2025\/06\/26\/exc-starmer-to-agree-one-in-one-out-asylum-exchange-with-france-for-labour-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complete<\/a> this arrangement in time for the first anniversary of his election win, ultimately falling short.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander appeared to talk down the potential for an agreement:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019m not going to speculate on the coverage of this possibility of a one-in-one-out agreement with France. We\u2019ve seen in the last couple of days, haven\u2019t we, that the French authorities are now using some new tactics to stop the boats in shallow waters.
