Wow,\u201d Ayers <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Astro_Ayers\/status\/1940810789830451563\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener\">wrote on X<\/a> on July 3. \u201cAs we went over Mexico and the U.S. this morning, I caught this sprite.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ayers explains that sprites are Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) that happen above clouds and are triggered by intense electrical activity in the thunderstorms below. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a great view above the clouds,\u201d Ayers notes of her floating home approximately 250 miles above the surface of Earth. \u201cScientists can use these types of pictures to better understand the formation, characteristics, and relationship of TLEs to thunderstorms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow astronaut and excellent photographer Don Pettit \u2014 who PetaPixel revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/10\/29\/watch-iss-astronauts-geek-out-about-photography-in-space-cupola\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent a long time trying to capture a sprite<\/a> from directly above when he was in orbit not long ago \u2014 says that, \u201cto record a photo like this takes skill to set up the camera but more than that, the knowledge of what lightning systems are likely to create sprites and the willingness to take 2000-5000 images where only one will record a sprite.  Kudos to Nichole for her  imagery efforts!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Don Pettit says you did a good job on your astrophotography, you know you did well! They are a <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/08\/22\/photographer-captures-enormous-red-sprite-in-the-sky-and-perseid-meteor-shower-paul-smith\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnet for photographers<\/a> thanks to their massive size and unusual form. But that attraction is actually <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/04\/01\/astrophotographers-help-scientists-solve-mystery-of-sprite-fireworks\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helping scientists <\/a> understand the phenomenon better. <\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/spritacular.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener\">Spritacular<\/a>\u201d citizen science project aims to collect observations of sprites and other optical phenomena occurring above thunderstorms.
