{"id":248433,"date":"2025-07-08T16:28:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T16:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/248433\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T16:28:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T16:28:12","slug":"wimbledon-2025-point-replayed-after-line-call-malfunction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/248433\/","title":{"rendered":"Wimbledon 2025: Point replayed after line call &#8216;malfunction&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">There was more controversy around the electronic line call system at Wimbledon during Tuesday&#8217;s quarter-final action as a point in Taylor Fritz&#8217;s match with Karen Khachanov had to be replayed because of a &#8220;malfunction&#8221; with the technology.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wimbledon organisers apologised on Saturday after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/tennis\/articles\/cz9k1071kp3o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human error led to the system on Centre Court being turned off by mistake<\/a> and missed three calls during Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova&#8217;s match with Britain&#8217;s Sonay Kartal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This time, &#8216;fault&#8217; was erroneously called during play in the first match of the fourth set, with Fritz leading 15-0 after taking the first two sets 6-3 6-4, but losing the third 1-6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Swedish umpire Louise Azemar-Engzell called &#8216;stop&#8217; and, after checking what the issue was over the phone, announced to the crowd inside Court One: &#8220;Ladies and gentleman we will replay the last point because of a malfunction. The system is now working.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A statement from the All England Club said: &#8220;The player&#8217;s service motion began while the BBG was still crossing the net and therefore the system didn&#8217;t recognise the start of the point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;As such the Chair Umpire instructed the point be replayed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wimbledon.com\/en_GB\/atoz\/ball_boys_and_ball_girls.html\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBG refers to Ball Boys and Girls, external<\/a> and the incident happened shortly after one had collected a ball from the middle of the court after Fritz&#8217;s first served had landed out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">American Fritz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/tennis\/articles\/ckg3d02j8xlo\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went on to win the match 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7-4) to reach the semi-finals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After the error in the Pavlyunchenkova-Kartal match, the All England Club said that they &#8216;continue to have full confidence in the accuracy of the ball-tracking technology&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Changes were made to remove the possibility of &#8220;human error&#8221; when operating the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wimbledon replaced line judges this year with the technology, which is being used at many other top-level tournaments, including the US Open and Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But it has received criticism from some of the players at the tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">British number one Emma Raducanu called it &#8220;dodgy&#8221;, while Switzerland&#8217;s Belinda Bencic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/tennis\/articles\/cx2g0n9dl7go\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said complaints about the technology are a topic in the locker room.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Raducanu was particularly unhappy when a shot from Aryna Sabalenka was judged to have clipped the line midway through the first set of her defeat by the world number one on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;That call was for sure out,&#8221; Raducanu said after a closely-fought 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 loss where she went toe-to-toe with the top seed for much of the match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Asked if she trusted the electronic line calls, Raducanu added: &#8220;No, I don&#8217;t &#8211; I think the other players would say the same thing, there were some pretty dodgy ones but what can you do?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There was more controversy around the electronic line call system at Wimbledon during Tuesday&#8217;s quarter-final action as a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":248434,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3163],"tags":[323,1942,53,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-248433","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-artificial-intelligence","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-technology","11":"tag-uk","12":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114818561013337194","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/248433","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=248433"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/248433\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/248434"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=248433"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=248433"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=248433"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
